The Chainsaw Man Movie’s ‘Censorship’ Is Surprisingly Faithful to the Manga

MAPPA acknowledged rating-driven moderation of violence and sexual expression, while the filmmakers described preserving Fujimoto’s visual style, dialogue, and atmosphere. The result is selective adaptation—not an unchanged manga, and not a rejection of its identity.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is best understood as a selective adaptation, not a scene-for-scene copy or a wholesale rewrite. MAPPA president Manabu Otsuka said the team toned down violence and sexual expression to meet film-rating constraints; the director and assistant director, meanwhile, described deliberately carrying the manga’s visual language, dialogue, and atmosphere into animation. That tension explains why the film can moderate some content and still feel strikingly faithful to Tatsuki Fujimoto’s work.

What does “censorship” mean in this case?

MAPPA president Manabu Otsuka said the Reze story contains substantial violence and sexual expression, and that film-industry ratings impose rules the team had to follow if it wanted the film to reach a broad audience. In remarks reported from MAPPA’s Anime Expo panel by ComicBook.com on 28 July 2025, Otsuka said the goal was to express as much of the original as possible while also allowing more people to see the movie.

That is evidence of deliberate moderation in those two content categories. It is not a catalogue of edits: Otsuka’s remarks do not identify particular scenes, panels, shots, or lines as removed or changed. Without a documented scene-by-scene comparison, it would be misleading to claim exactly what was cut or how each moment differs from the manga.

How can the film be moderated yet faithful?

Content treatment and adaptation style are different questions. A film can soften some material to meet a rating context while preserving a source’s character expressions, visual composition, dialogue, and dramatic mood. The filmmakers’ descriptions support that distinction: they spoke about translating Fujimoto’s manga language into a fixed audiovisual form, not reproducing every page unchanged.

The filmmakers’ stated approach

In a MANTANWEB interview published 19 September 2025, director Tatsuya Yoshihara and assistant director Makoto Nakazono discussed returning to the manga’s appeal, panel layouts, visual style, and expressions. The English version identifies itself as machine translated, so its wording should be treated accordingly. Nakazono described valuing the “sense of space between pictures” and Fujimoto’s dialogue so that the story’s flow could come through in animation.

The interview also describes choices intended to evoke the source’s impression, including Makima and Power’s hair colors and characters’ eyes without highlights. Yoshihara encouraged casual or exaggerated facial expressions where they worked. These examples suggest active visual interpretation: the crew used animation-specific decisions to evoke the manga rather than simply tracing it.

What changes when panels become a movie

A manga reader controls pacing: the reader can pause between panels, move quickly through dialogue, or linger over an expression. A film fixes timing, sound, performance, and movement. Nakazono’s comments about preserving the space between images point to an attempt to retain a quality of manga pacing within that different medium. The result can be faithful in mood and visual grammar without being identical in content or rhythm.

What do the ratings establish?

Ratings provide context for the constraints Otsuka described, but they do not prove that a particular edit occurred. They also differ by territory; an age or content label in one country should not be treated as a universal rating.

Territory or record What the classification says What it does—and does not—show
United States Sony Pictures labels the 2025 film Rated R on its U.S. film page. Confirms the U.S. rating; it does not identify specific changes from the manga.
United Kingdom The BBFC records describe strong bloody violence and gore. Its entries include multiple cinema versions with different runtimes and descriptors, as well as a separate home-entertainment VOD/streaming classification dated 17 December 2025. Shows that the film remains violent in UK classification; the differing records mean no single runtime should be presented as universal.
Australia Australian Classification records a 100-minute film classified on 23 September 2025, with strong blood and gore, supernatural themes, and animated violence. These details belong to that Australian classification record, not every territory or release version.
Indonesia Lembaga Sensor Film lists the film as suitable for audiences aged 13 and above. This is an Indonesian classification and is not directly comparable to the U.S. R label without accounting for different local systems.

The U.S. R rating and the UK description of strong bloody violence and gore make one point clear: “toned down” does not mean mild or bloodless. At the same time, classification language describes the released film under local rules; it cannot tell viewers which source moments were altered.

Is the movie a faithful adaptation of the manga?

In a qualified sense, yes. The available evidence supports an adaptation that retains important elements of Fujimoto’s visual and dramatic style while moderating violence and sexual expression for the film-rating context. The filmmakers’ comments establish their intentions and methods, not an independent audit of the finished film. Calling the movie simply “uncensored” would ignore Otsuka’s remarks; calling it unfaithful because of those remarks would overlook the other dimensions of adaptation the creators describe.

For a comparison, look beyond a binary faithful/unfaithful verdict. Consider how the movie handles content, how it translates panel layouts and expressions, how its fixed timing and sound shape dialogue and atmosphere, and which country’s rating is being discussed. Those axes make room for both adaptation choices and recognizable fidelity.

Should you still read the Reze story after watching?

Yes, if you want to experience Fujimoto’s original pacing and page-to-page visual choices directly. The film is a sequel to the 2022 TV anime and adapts the Reze story from the manga; Sony’s UK distributor page identifies Fujimoto’s original story, serialized in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+, as its source. Reading the original manga gives you the reader-controlled pauses, panel transitions, and expressions that an animated adaptation must reinterpret. The evidence here does not establish which collected volume contains the entire arc, so check the edition’s contents before choosing one.
