Celestial Island is Tiamut’s exposed, frozen remains—and in Captain America: Brave New World, those remains become the MCU’s newest strategic resource. Adamantium is being mined there, while President Thaddeus Ross pursues an international treaty intended to prevent governments from turning the metal into the cause of a global arms race.
Celestial Island is the exposed, frozen remains of Tiamut, the Celestial whose emergence was stopped in Eternals. In Captain America: Brave New World, the remains are no longer just a strange monument in the Indian Ocean. They contain adamantium, a strategically valuable metal, and President Thaddeus Ross proposes an international treaty to control its mining and distribution.
That change turns an unresolved cosmic event into a grounded geopolitical crisis. Governments now have reasons to claim access to the island, control the refining process, prevent rivals from acquiring the metal, and stop criminals from selling it on the black market. The treaty is therefore more than background diplomacy: it is the MCU’s attempt to prevent a new arms race.
What is Celestial Island?
In Eternals, the Celestial Tiamut begins emerging from Earth. The Eternals stop the emergence before the Celestial can fully appear, leaving its enormous body frozen and protruding from the planet. The remains rise from the Indian Ocean and form the landmass later known as Celestial Island.

The event should have been one of the most consequential discoveries in human history. A dead or immobilized Celestial is not an ordinary geological formation: it is an alien cosmic being embedded in Earth, large enough to become a permanent feature of the planet’s geography.
For much of the MCU’s subsequent storytelling, however, Tiamut’s remains remained largely off-screen. Brave New World gives the location a continuing purpose. Scientists and governments discover that the Celestial’s body contains adamantium, making the island a source of a new strategic resource.
The important shift is this:
- In Eternals: Tiamut is an existential threat whose emergence must be stopped.
- In Brave New World: Tiamut’s frozen remains are treated as a resource deposit that governments want to regulate and exploit.
A cosmic corpse has effectively become the MCU’s equivalent of a newly discovered strategic mineral reserve.
What does the adamantium treaty do?
President Ross presents the international treaty as a framework for mining and distributing adamantium. Its stated purpose is to prevent countries from secretly stockpiling the metal or turning it into a weapons advantage over every other nation.

The opening conflict shows why such an agreement is necessary. Refined adamantium samples are stolen, demonstrating that the material already has immense value and that there is an illicit market for it. The treaty is not being negotiated before anyone knows what adamantium is worth; it is being proposed while governments, intelligence organizations, and criminal interests are already competing for access.
Ross’s diplomatic initiative is disrupted by the wider conspiracy involving Samuel Sterns, also known as the Leader, mind-controlled attackers, and escalating tensions involving Japan. As the crisis grows, the dispute ultimately returns to Celestial Island, where control of the resource becomes an immediate international concern.
The agreement is ultimately ratified after the crisis, although the film does not establish a comprehensive legal code explaining every country’s ownership rights, mining quota, security responsibility, or share of the refined material. It is best understood as a political mechanism for shared access and arms control, not as a fully explained replacement for international law.
Why stolen samples matter
The stolen samples do important world-building work. They establish that adamantium is not merely a theoretical substance that might become useful someday. It is already valuable enough to motivate espionage, theft, covert buyers, and weapons-related anxiety.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat also explains why a treaty is necessary in the first place. If the only issue were scientific research, governments could negotiate laboratory access. Once refined adamantium can be converted into weapons, armor, containment systems, or other military equipment, the disagreement becomes a matter of national security.
Why adamantium changes the MCU’s geopolitical map
1. It creates a rival to Wakanda’s strategic advantage
Before the discovery on Celestial Island, vibranium was the MCU’s most prominent strategic material. Wakanda’s control of its supply helped preserve the country’s technological sovereignty and made it a central power in global politics.
Adamantium introduces a competing resource with a different ownership problem. It is not located inside a country that has controlled it for generations. It is found on a newly exposed Celestial body in international waters, creating pressure for multiple powers to claim access.
This does not mean adamantium automatically replaces vibranium. The two materials have different histories, properties, and political associations. The more defensible conclusion is that other governments now have an alternative strategic resource to pursue. They may negotiate with Wakanda from a stronger position, try to acquire both metals, or treat control of Celestial Island as a way to reduce their dependence on Wakanda.
The film does not announce a future Wakanda-versus-adamantium storyline. That is an implication of the treaty premise and the MCU’s established vibranium politics, not a confirmed plot plan.
2. Celestial Island creates a sovereignty problem
Tiamut’s remains raise questions that do not apply to an ordinary island:
- Who owns land that emerged in international waters?
- Can a Celestial’s body legally be treated as a mineral deposit?
- Who has authority to approve mining and refining?
- Which countries are entitled to the material?
- Who is responsible if extraction damages the remains or creates a wider hazard?
- How should the site be protected from sabotage, occupation, or criminal trafficking?
Brave New World uses the treaty to move past those questions without spelling out a detailed maritime or property-law regime. That leaves Celestial Island available as a recurring political setting. Future stories could examine extraction rights, environmental damage, humanitarian protests, military occupation, sabotage, or disputes over whether the remains should be mined at all.
3. It makes an arms race plausible
Marvel’s comics have long associated adamantium with exceptionally durable weapons, armor, and bodies. In the MCU, Brave New World gives the material a newly revealed source and explicitly connects its distribution to arms-race concerns.

That gives Marvel a straightforward way to introduce adamantium technology into the main continuity. A future government or private organization could develop protective equipment, weapons, restraints, aircraft components, or specialized armor from the material. The treaty would then become a system that characters might defend, violate, manipulate, or abandon.
There is an important limit, however. The film does not define every property of MCU adamantium or establish that every comic-book application will work identically on screen. It confirms the material’s existence and political importance, not a complete technical specification.
4. It makes the aftermath of Eternals matter again
The frozen Celestial was an enormous visual consequence of Eternals, but it did not immediately become a major part of the MCU’s political narrative. The adamantium discovery gives the location an ongoing function.
Governments, intelligence agencies, scientists, criminal networks, and superheroes can now have practical reasons to visit or defend the island. Its existence is no longer only evidence that a Celestial nearly emerged from Earth. It is also the source of a resource capable of changing military and economic power.
This is a form of world-building repair. The MCU can acknowledge that the world would not simply ignore a gigantic alien body sticking out of the ocean, while still using the location for stories that do not require another cosmic apocalypse.
Adamantium in Marvel comics versus the MCU
The word adamantium carries decades of comic-book meaning, but the comic and film origins should not be treated as the same continuity.
In Marvel’s comics history, Dr. Myron MacLain’s experiments produced proto-adamantium, the unique alloy associated with Captain America’s iconic shield. Attempts to reproduce that process led to adamantium. Comics also distinguish between different forms or grades of the metal and connect it to major characters, most famously Wolverine.
The MCU has now supplied a different origin: adamantium is discovered in the remains of Tiamut. That does not prove that the MCU will reproduce the comic-book process, MacLain’s role, the shield’s exact composition, or every known variation of the alloy.
| Question | Comics context | MCU information established by Brave New World |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it come from? | Associated with Dr. Myron MacLain’s experiments and later reproduction attempts. | It is found in Tiamut’s remains on Celestial Island. |
| What is it used for? | Weapons, armor, Captain America’s shield history, and Wolverine’s skeleton and claws. | The film emphasizes mining, refining, distribution, and the risk of an arms race. |
| What does its discovery mean? | It is already a familiar part of Marvel’s fictional technology and character history. | It is a newly important resource that governments are trying to control. |
The comics history explains why audiences immediately associate adamantium with Captain America and Wolverine. It does not confirm that the MCU will use the same origin story or introduce the same characters on the same timeline.
What does the treaty mean for Sam Wilson?
The adamantium dispute gives Sam Wilson a Captain America problem that cannot be solved simply by defeating a villain.
Sam becomes involved after meeting President Ross and is drawn into an international incident involving governments, covert manipulation, and the struggle over Celestial Island. His role is therefore not limited to being the strongest person in the room. He must judge competing claims, build trust, prevent escalation, and decide how Captain America should act when no single side has an uncomplicated moral position.
That fits Sam’s position after Endgame. He is Captain America without the super-soldier transformation traditionally associated with Steve Rogers. His authority comes from judgment, empathy, courage, and the ability to represent an ideal in public rather than from physical superiority alone.

As the new Captain America, he is being placed at the intersection of superhero action and international diplomacy. The central question is not only whether Sam can stop a conspiracy. It is whether he can help shape rules for a world that keeps discovering powers no government is prepared to control.
Does Celestial Island set up Wolverine or the X-Men?
It creates a possible path, but it does not confirm Wolverine or the X-Men.
Adamantium’s most famous association is Wolverine. By establishing that the substance exists in the MCU, the film removes one major world-building obstacle to future adamantium-based characters. Marvel no longer has to explain where the material came from if it later introduces Weapon X, Wolverine’s skeleton, or another character connected to the alloy.
But Brave New World does not introduce Logan, confirm the Weapon X program, show a skeletal procedure, or announce that Tiamut’s remains will be used to create Wolverine. It also does not establish that the X-Men will be tied to Celestial Island.

The post-credits scene has Sam confronting Sterns, who warns him about threats from other worlds. That warning points toward the MCU’s wider multiverse storyline, but the film does not explicitly connect those threats to adamantium or Celestial Island.
The safest interpretation is that Brave New World is setting up two different scales of conflict:
- Earth-level politics: governments, treaties, resources, national security, and the consequences of mining Tiamut.
- Cosmic and multiversal danger: threats from other worlds that may require a response larger than any single country or hero.
Those threads may eventually intersect, but the post-credits scene does not say that adamantium will be central to the next multiverse conflict.

Marvel’s official movie roadmap lists Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars as future theatrical projects, with Secret Wars listed for December 17, 2027. The warning about threats from other worlds makes those projects relevant to the film’s broader direction.
Marvel has not publicly established that Celestial Island or the adamantium treaty will be central to either movie. There is no confirmed announcement that a particular Avenger, mutant, country, or villain will fight over the island in one of those films.
The strongest forecast is structural rather than specific. The treaty expands the MCU’s Earth-based political map at the same time that the franchise is increasing its multiversal stakes. That combination could support stories in which governments compete over resources while heroes confront dangers crossing realities. It does not confirm a particular crossover or treaty outcome.
What is confirmed, and what is speculation?
| Established by the films | Possible future implication |
|---|---|
| Tiamut’s remains form Celestial Island. | The island becomes a recurring geopolitical location. |
| Adamantium is found in the remains. | The metal challenges Wakanda’s strategic position or changes global alliances. |
| Ross pursues an international treaty governing adamantium. | The treaty becomes a source of future disputes, sabotage, or political pressure. |
| Stolen refined samples show that adamantium is already a security concern. | Criminal groups, private contractors, and rival governments compete for the supply. |
| Sam Wilson becomes involved in the international incident. | Sam develops into a leader who negotiates rules for new superhuman resources. |
| Sterns warns Sam about threats from other worlds. | The treaty and multiverse storyline eventually intersect. |
| Marvel has announced future Avengers projects. | Celestial Island or adamantium becomes a confirmed part of those films. |

The larger MCU consequence
Celestial Island turns the MCU’s biggest unresolved geographic oddity into a permanent political fault line. Tiamut was once an existential threat rising out of Earth; now the frozen remains are a source of a metal that governments want to mine, refine, distribute, and weaponize.

The adamantium treaty gives Sam Wilson a leadership challenge larger than a single villain. It gives rival powers a reason to compete with or negotiate around Wakanda. It gives Marvel an in-universe source for one of its most important fictional materials. And it creates a plausible bridge to future stories involving advanced weapons, international conflict, and possibly mutant characters.
What it does not do is confirm Wolverine, the X-Men, a specific Avengers crossover, or a detailed legal regime for the island. For now, the most important development is simpler: the MCU has transformed a Celestial corpse into a resource crisis that can continue shaping its world long after the events of Eternals.

What is the adamantium treaty supposed to do?
The treaty is presented as an international agreement to govern the mining and distribution of adamantium and prevent countries from turning the resource into an arms-race advantage. The film does not provide a complete legal framework for ownership or extraction rights.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Celestial Island is Tiamut’s frozen remains, and the adamantium treaty is an attempt to stop the resource from triggering a global arms race. It establishes a new Earth-level power struggle, potentially complicates Wakanda’s position, and makes Wolverine-related storytelling possible—but it does not yet confirm Wolverine, the X-Men, or a role for the island in a specific future Avengers film.
