Who was in the cast of 8 Simple Rules?
The U.S. comedy debuted in 2002, according to Apple TV’s series listing. John Ritter and Katey Sagal played parents Paul and Cate Hennessy, while Kaley Cuoco, Amy Davidson, and Martin Spanjers played their children Bridget, Kerry, and Rory. James Garner and David Spade joined the cast as the series continued.

How did John Ritter’s death change the show?
Ritter died in 2003 after collapsing on the set during production of the second season. TV Insider reported that the cause was an aortic dissection. The series addressed his death by writing Paul Hennessy’s death into the story, changing the family sitcom’s direction rather than recasting Paul. TV Insider’s account of the show’s continuation describes James Garner joining as Jim Egan as production moved forward.
Where are the 8 Simple Rules cast members now?
John Ritter as Paul Hennessy
Ritter died in 2003, during the show’s second season. His warm, comic portrayal of Paul was the center of the original family dynamic. Rather than treat his role as an ordinary career update, the series made his absence part of the Hennessys’ story.

Katey Sagal as Cate Hennessy
Sagal continued to work in television and voice acting after 8 Simple Rules. Later credits listed in a career roundup include Sons of Anarchy and the animated series Futurama. These are selected career credits, not a claim about her current role or employment.
Kaley Cuoco as Bridget Hennessy
Cuoco later became widely known for playing Penny on The Big Bang Theory and took on other projects. In a May 2024 interview with Us Weekly, she said she sometimes catches 8 Simple Rules in the background and that watching it brings back fond memories. She made those remarks at the John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health’s annual gala.
In a TV Insider interview published September 19, 2025, Cuoco described a lesson from Ritter: “The most important thing I learned from John was to do anything for the laugh,” she said. “I live by that today.”

Amy Davidson as Kerry Hennessy
Selected later credits listed for Davidson include All Rise, The Rookie, Better Call Saul, and The Lincoln Lawyer. In the same September 2025 TV Insider interview, Davidson recalled Ritter’s advice about trusting her instincts: “At one point, John and the casting director of 8 Simple Rules encouraged me to trust my instincts,” she said. “When I read a script, I might see something different. I learned from John to trust myself.”
Martin Spanjers as Rory Hennessy
Spanjers’s selected later credits include appearances in True Blood, Good Luck Charlie, and Angel from Hell, as well as film roles. The available career roundup does not establish his latest project, so these credits offer a snapshot of work after the sitcom rather than a current-status report.
David Spade as C.J. Barnes
Spade joined the show after Ritter’s death as C.J. Barnes. Apple TV’s cast listing identifies him in the role. The cited sources establish his place in the later cast, but do not provide a basis here for a specific update on his current projects.

James Garner as Jim Egan
Garner joined the series after Ritter’s death as Jim Egan. He died in 2014. His addition helped the show continue after its leading actor’s death; the cited account does not provide a detailed retrospective of Garner’s wider career.

Years after the series, Cuoco and Davidson have recalled practical advice they received from Ritter. Cuoco’s memory was about committing to comedy and thinking about the audience; Davidson’s was about trusting her instincts when interpreting a script. Cuoco also said in 2024 that revisiting the show occasionally brings back fond memories. Together, their recollections point to a lasting personal connection to their co-star as well as a formative experience on the sitcom.
