Spoilers for “Ice Cream,” Season 2, Episode 4. Nan and Guy find each other in Italy, but their reunion cannot keep Nan from the responsibilities waiting in England: her political work and her concern for Jinny. Meanwhile, Theo’s pursuit of Lizzy creates another breach in Nan’s marriage.
Episode details: “Ice Cream”
The individual Apple TV episode listing and Rotten Tomatoes identify this as “Ice Cream,” Season 2, Episode 4, released July 9, 2025. Apple lists a runtime of 41 minutes. Apple’s season-level catalog currently gives Episode 4 a different title, “Homecoming,” and a New York-set synopsis. The episode-specific listing and Rotten Tomatoes instead match the Italy-set story recapped here, so the catalog entries conflict.
Apple’s episode synopsis describes the episode as moving “From sun-drenched Italy to a champagne-soaked English garden party, emotions run high and chances are taken.”
Nan and Guy reunite, but the escape is temporary
After leaving Tintagel in the previous episode, Nan travels to Italy and finds Guy. Their romance rekindles, and for a while the two can inhabit the possibility of being together without the immediate demands of the world they left behind. The episode gives their time together a dreamlike, provisional quality: it feels like an escape, but not a plan that can solve what awaits them.

That contrast sharpens when Nan sees a newspaper headline that brings her political work on women’s rights back into focus. Her decision is also tied to Jinny, whose safety remains uncertain. Nan chooses to return to England without Guy. He is hurt, and the reunion ends not because their feelings have vanished, but because Nan sees obligations she cannot set aside.
Jinny faces a dangerous choice
While Nan and Guy are away, Lord Seadown reaches Jinny. In Jonathon Wilson’s Ready Steady Cut recap, Seadown’s reassuring promises and charm make a settled life appear safer than fleeing with an infant. That framing captures the bind Jinny faces: the prospect of security is difficult to dismiss, but it comes from a man whose return leaves her vulnerable.

Her situation gives Nan’s return a concrete urgency. Nan’s choice is not simply between a lover and a cause; her sister’s circumstances make staying away feel like abandoning someone who may have few safe options.
Theo and Lizzy complicate Nan’s return
In England, Theo attends Hector’s fundraiser auction and makes an extravagant purchase to attract Lizzy’s attention. They kiss and later sleep together. Theo is Nan’s husband, and Lizzy is close to her wedding, so the affair creates a fresh personal crisis just as Nan is preparing to re-enter English social and political life.

The Italy and England threads place romantic escape beside its consequences. Nan leaves Guy because her duties and Jinny’s safety matter; Theo, by contrast, acts on his attraction to Lizzy despite the commitments surrounding them. The episode makes those choices part of the same unsettled world Nan is returning to.
Blanche, Hector, Mabel and Honoria
Other relationship questions develop alongside the main plot. Blanche and Hector talk about love, while Mabel longs for a relationship with Honoria that polite society would not accept. Wilson’s recap treats these threads as receiving less attention than the episode’s other developments; that is a critical judgment about emphasis, not a fact about the characters’ feelings.

What Nan’s decision means
Nan and Guy’s reunion offers a glimpse of what they want, but the episode refuses to treat desire as an answer to every problem. Nan goes back because her political purpose and her sister’s safety still require her attention. Her choice costs Guy, while the developments involving Jinny and Theo ensure that returning to England will bring her into conflict rather than offer an easy resolution.
Wilson summarizes the episode’s tension as a sense that “none of the good things can last, and none of the bad ones can be evaded forever.” That is the critic’s interpretation, not dialogue from the episode.

Sources and adaptation context
Apple describes The Buccaneers as a drama about American girls in 1870s London. Rotten Tomatoes credits Edith Wharton and Georgia Christou in its screenwriter/source-material field for this episode. Wharton’s novel is relevant background, but that credit does not establish that “Ice Cream” closely adapts a particular passage.
The listings also disagree on the episode’s rating: Apple’s individual page gives TV-MA and flags sexual content, while Rotten Tomatoes displays TV-14. Without specifying a territory or rating system, neither should be presented as a universally definitive rating.
