The Brothers Sun is worth watching chiefly for Michelle Yeoh’s Eileen “Mama” Sun: a formidable mother and operator whose presence gives the series its emotional center. Netflix’s eight-episode action comedy-drama mixes violent set pieces and dark humor with a story about family loyalty. Its later episodes can feel overextended, but Yeoh’s performance makes the family drama more compelling than the show’s uneven pacing sometimes allows.
What is The Brothers Sun about?
Netflix’s The Brothers Sun follows Charles “Chairleg” Sun, who travels from Taipei to Los Angeles after a mysterious enemy targets his powerful Taiwanese triad leader father. Charles’s mother, Eileen, and younger brother Bruce are in danger. Bruce, raised apart from the family’s criminal world, has been kept unaware of it.

The family’s Los Angeles home base is in the San Gabriel Valley. Threats pull Eileen, Charles, and Bruce into the same orbit, forcing them to reckon with family obligations and with what it means to be a son or a brother. Showrunner and writer Brad Falchuk described the family conflicts as an “extreme version” of problems that are emotionally universal. The series is fiction, not an account of real Taiwanese organized crime.
Why Michelle Yeoh is the series’ center
Yeoh plays Eileen as both a doting mother and a capable operator. She is not simply the person Charles has come to protect: she has her own ambitions, authority, and relationships in the community. That breadth gives the show a stronger dramatic anchor than the basic premise of a dangerous family reunion might suggest.
#1 Best Overall
TIME’s January 4, 2024 review identifies Yeoh’s character arc as the element that elevates a show it otherwise finds at times bloated. Her gravitas connects the action to the everyday work of protecting a family and maintaining influence. The result is a character-driven thread running through a series that otherwise moves between crime plotting, comedy, and elaborate fights.
How well do the action and comedy work?
The series is lively when it leans into its genre mix. TIME found the first episode auspicious and praised the inventive hand-to-hand combat, humor, and continuing entertainment value. The Associated Press framed the show as an elixir of crime drama and comedy, and as an attempt to disrupt formulaic Hollywood portrayals of Asian immigrant families. That is the series’ aim, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the balance successful.
Rank #2
The action-comedy approach also makes the family story accessible without turning it into a conventional domestic drama. But the tonal range can make the plotting feel crowded: the show has to service criminal rivalries, family tensions, law enforcement, and vigilante threads at once.
Where the series loses momentum
TIME’s main reservation is the back half. Later episodes stretch beyond an hour, and the expanding web of law-enforcement and vigilante subplots can make some fight sequences feel like padding rather than story progression. Viewers who prize tight pacing may find the season less focused as it goes on.

The brothers’ relationship is comparatively familiar, in TIME’s assessment, while Big Sun remains a cartoonish background villain. That leaves some family members and conflicts less developed than Eileen’s arc. Yeoh’s performance remains a strength, but it cannot make every strand equally rich.
What the series gets right about its family and cultural frame
Netflix reports that all eight episodes were written by an all-Asian writers’ room alongside Falchuk, with cast members contributing Taiwanese slang. The production context supports the series’ interest in cultural specificity and family ties, rather than treating the immigrant family as a single stereotype. The AP likewise describes the show as aiming to shake up formulaic depictions, though that critical framing should not be mistaken for universal agreement about its success.

Is The Brothers Sun worth watching?
Watch it if you want Michelle Yeoh at the center of a crime-family story, enjoy kinetic action mixed with dark humor, and are willing to accept an uneven, sometimes sprawling season. Skip it if concise pacing and consistently developed ensemble arcs matter more to you than a magnetic lead performance and an unusual blend of action and family drama.
Episodes, rating, and season status
Netflix lists The Brothers Sun as a 2024 TV-MA action series with eight episodes and stars Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien, and Sam Song Li. Netflix’s listing is for Season 1. A March 2, 2024 report by Deadline, republished by Yahoo Entertainment, said Netflix would not proceed with a second season; that status was reported by the trade press, rather than announced in the cited Netflix listing. Netflix catalog availability may vary by territory.
