HMHS Britannic sank in 1916 after striking a German mine off the Greek island of Kea. More than a century later, its wreck lies over 120 meters underwater. Interior survey photographs and schematics have been published, and a 2025 expedition recovered selected objects—including a bell, signal light and Turkish bath tiles. But the available sources do not provide a complete room-by-room inventory of what survives inside.
How Britannic sank
Britannic was an Olympic-class ship commissioned by the British Admiralty for conversion into a hospital ship during World War I. On November 16, 1916, while sailing toward the hospital station at Lemnos, it struck a German mine off Kea, Greece. The Hellenic Ministry of Culture’s Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities reports that the ship sank in less than an hour. Of the 1,065 people aboard, 30 died when the ship’s propellers swept away two lifeboats.
The date, route and casualty figures here follow the Ephorate’s official account. Its report on the 2025 expedition is the primary source for those details.
What is known about the wreck’s interior
There is photographic and technical material documenting parts of the wreck’s interior, but that is not the same as a verified inventory of every room or surviving object. Bloomsbury’s catalog describes Simon Mills’s book Inside the Britannic: Uncovering the Wreck of the Titanic’s Sister Ship as drawing on an extensive wreck survey, including photographs from inside, technical schematics for specific areas and recreated digital images. That is the publisher’s description of the book; it does not establish that every space has been surveyed, is accessible or remains intact.

The clearest concrete evidence comes from objects recovered during the 2025 expedition. The Ephorate names the ship’s observatory bell, its left signal light, portable equipment, detached Turkish bath tiles and observation binoculars. The Associated Press also reported silver-plated first-class trays and a porcelain washbasin from second-class cabins. These are selected finds, not a complete inventory of Britannic’s interior.
For readers seeking interior images and schematics, Bloomsbury’s Spring 2025 catalog describes Inside the Britannic by Simon Mills. Its description is a guide to the book’s contents, not independent confirmation of the condition of every space or object.

What the 2025 expedition recovered
With approval from Greece’s Ministry of Culture, an expedition worked at the wreck from May 6 to 13, 2025, at a depth greater than 120 meters. The Ephorate says an 11-member team of professional deep-sea divers used closed-circuit equipment, with three Ephorate team members overseeing the work, coordinating the operation, receiving finds and beginning their conservation.
The work was challenging. The Ephorate reported strong currents, great depth and low visibility; the Associated Press described the wreck as around 120 meters, or nearly 400 feet, down. Some objects identified during planning could not be raised because of their position or preservation condition. The recovery therefore represents a limited selection, not a comprehensive removal of artifacts.

They are intended for a permanent World War I exhibition at the National Museum of Underwater Antiquities, which is under construction in Piraeus. The official account does not give an opening date or say that the artifacts are currently available for public viewing.

Why seeing inside Britannic is difficult
Britannic rests more than 120 meters below the surface, making it a deep technical-diving site rather than an accessible recreational wreck. The 2025 team used closed-circuit rebreathers, and the Ephorate cites depth, currents and poor visibility as obstacles. These conditions help explain why photographs, surveys and selected recoveries provide only partial evidence about the interior.
A project page from WreckDiving says its documentation project began in 2012 in cooperation with the Ephorate and provides background on the ship and earlier wreck exploration. Its account contains a conflicting date for the sinking, so the official Ephorate date above is used here. WreckDiving’s HMHS Britannic page offers that project context.
