Spoilers for The Boys Season 4 finale, “Season Four Finale.” Homelander’s side wins control of the government, Butcher kills Victoria Neuman and takes the supe virus, and most of the Boys are captured or driven into hiding. A post-credit scene reveals Soldier Boy is alive, held in a regulated coma.
How the finale’s plans unravel
The eighth episode closes a season of political maneuvering with two plans colliding. Homelander wants a supe in the White House, and Victoria Neuman’s threatened position seems to offer a path to that outcome. But the apparent setbacks are not the whole story: Sister Sage has anticipated Homelander’s failures and kept a broader strategy moving.
Neuman, alarmed by threats to her daughter Zoey and the failed assassination plot, agrees to work with the Boys if they protect them. The alliance barely has time to form. Ryan kills Grace Mallory, a rupture that pushes Butcher toward the brutal course he had been resisting.
Butcher chooses the virus
Butcher uses the tentacular power linked to his tumor to kill Neuman in front of Zoey. He knocks the others aside and takes the new supe virus. The episode shows the power emerging from Butcher and the killing; it does not establish that the tumor is literally a separate creature, so that description is best treated as interpretation rather than fact.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What this choice means: Butcher has framed his actions around protecting people from Homelander and the supes. Taking a weapon that could kill supes broadly makes his goal and his methods collide. That is an interpretation of the cliffhanger, not a stated plan for how the virus will be used.
Homelander’s side takes power
Sage’s larger plan turns what looked like failure into a political victory. President Calhoun takes office, declares martial law, and deputizes supes who report to Homelander. Robert Singer, the president-elect, is arrested in connection with Neuman’s death. Homelander has gained expanded state power, but the episode also makes clear that Sage’s strategy is central to that outcome.

The episode’s political violence is fictional, and its connection to real events should not be mistaken for proof of prediction or intent. The finale was filmed in 2023, and its original title, “Assassination Run,” was changed to “Season Four Finale.” Reporting also noted that a viewer-discretion notice was added amid a recent real-world assassination attempt. The episode’s warning reads: “Any similarities to recent events are completely coincidental and unintentional.”
That qualification does not mean the show has no political satire. The Los Angeles Times quoted showrunner Eric Kripke on the story’s societal framing: “I wouldn’t call it a reflection, but I would say this is our worst fear of a pushed version of society.” The distinction matters: Kripke described a heightened fear, while the warning addresses similarities to recent events.

Who escapes—and who is caught?
As the Boys try to scatter and go underground, the roundup separates them. Most are caught; Starlight escapes after her powers return, while Hughie is subdued. The finale also brings in Cate Dunlap and Sam Riordan from Gen V, linking the series’ shared franchise storyline.
The episode leaves other fates unresolved, including Ryan’s future. Its ending does not provide answers to every character’s situation, and the roundup should not be read as either a clean escape for the team or a confirmed final outcome for everyone.

What the post-credit scene reveals
The post-credit scene reveals Soldier Boy alive and being kept in a regulated coma. It establishes a major unresolved family and power dynamic for the next season, without showing what will happen when he wakes—or whether he will.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the ending is a cliffhanger, not the series finale
The finale reverses the Boys’ position: Homelander’s faction has state power, the group is captured or scattered, and Butcher is carrying the virus. Those events set up the final season without resolving the conflict. Amazon renewed the series for a fifth season in 2024, and the Los Angeles Times reported that Kripke described Season 5 as the show’s last.
