Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Spoilers for The Boys Season 4, Episode 5, “Beware the Jabberwock, My Son.” The June 27, 2024 episode (68 minutes, according to TV Guide’s Season 4 guide) puts three uneasy choices side by side: the Boys temporarily work with Victoria Neuman, Hughie must decide what to do when Compound V leaves his father dangerous and confused, and Ryan’s wish to help people is redirected by Homelander.
What happens in “Beware the Jabberwock, My Son”?
Butcher tells the Boys that a supe-killing virus developed at Godolkin could threaten Neuman, though, as he explains it, it is not strong enough to kill Homelander. The team needs more than the last known dose. To get help, they bargain with Stan Edgar, offering a presidential pardon and the possibility of custody of his granddaughter, Zoey. Their cooperation with Neuman is a temporary truce, not a change of sides: the characters’ interests remain fundamentally opposed.
Meanwhile, Sister Sage’s effort to find the mole puts A-Train’s secret assistance to the Boys at risk. He admits to Ashley that he leaked the footage and pressures her to help conceal it. Ashley redirects suspicion toward Cameron Coleman. A-Train’s decision protects him, but the scene also shows the remorse he has not managed to shake.
Why does the farm become a trap?
The search for the virus leads the group to Stan’s farm, where Compound V has contaminated the animals’ water. The exposed animals attack, turning the research site into a lethal trap. With the last known dose of virus contained in a corpse, the group uses it to poison the animals. The tactic stops the immediate threat, but it is a grim, improvised victory rather than a clean solution.

Sameer vanishes during the chaos. The apparent trail is a severed leg, but Butcher and Joe have secretly taken him. Their real plan is to force him to produce more virus. Butcher has advanced the mission while withholding the truth from the others, making the episode’s uneasy cooperation extend inside the team itself.
What is Hughie’s final decision about his father?
Daphne reveals that she injected Hugh Sr. with Compound V while he was comatose. He wakes feeling well, but his new phasing power comes with confusion and memory loss. At the hospital, he injures and kills people and becomes a danger to Daphne. Hughie briefly reaches him through a childhood memory, but the moment does not make his father safe or restore his clarity.

Hughie ultimately injects his father with a drug, ending the danger and Hugh Sr.’s life. In the family’s imagined farewell, they take a trip to Paris as he dies. The decision belongs to Hughie—not Daphne—and the episode presents it as a painful choice made under extraordinary fictional circumstances, not as a model for real medical or end-of-life decisions.
Showrunner Eric Kripke framed Hughie’s season-long arc as growing up: “For Hughie, his story this season, in so many ways, is about him really growing up.” He also described Hugh Sr.’s condition as “a version of superpowered dementia.” That is creative framing for the show’s fictional Compound V effects, not a clinical account of dementia. See TVLine’s interview with Kripke.

How does Homelander shape Ryan’s idea of helping?
Ryan says he wants to help people for real. Homelander points him toward Vought employee harassment by director Adam Bourke, but models a response rooted in humiliation and violence rather than protection or accountability. Ryan takes part and appears pleased by the outcome. The episode leaves his moral independence unsettled: his stated desire to do good is real, but Homelander is teaching him to treat power and cruelty as justice.
What does V52 reveal about Vought and Gen V?
At the Vought expo, the company packages its agenda as entertainment announcements, including a body-swap movie presented by Cate and Sam, who are celebrated as heroes. Kripke says Vought rewards them after villainous actions while the genuine heroes from Gen V’s finale remain imprisoned. He describes Cate as receptive to Homelander’s anti-human rhetoric and Sam as more conflicted. The contrast makes the expo a showcase of how Vought can turn political alignment into celebrity and sell it as spectacle. ComicBook.com’s episode recap covers the V52 thread.

What the episode’s parallel choices add up to
- Hughie chooses care through a terrible act: he stops his father from causing further harm, but loses him in the process.
- Butcher chooses results over trust: the virus plan moves forward, while his deception over Sameer puts the team’s trust under strain.
- Ryan’s wish to help meets Homelander’s example: Ryan’s first attempt at real justice becomes an exercise in coercive humiliation.
These choices do not resolve the characters’ moral conflicts. They show how, in this episode, good intentions, tactical success and power can each come with a cost.
