Spoilers for the season 4 finale, “Assassination Run.” Homelander does not win a presidential election, but he ends the finale with effective political control: Robert Singer is arrested, Steven Calhoun takes office, and the Boys are captured. Ryan has killed Grace Mallory, Butcher has killed Victoria Neuman, and a mid-credits scene reveals that Soldier Boy is alive. These are the starting conditions for the final season, not the end of the conflict.
What happens at the end of The Boys season 4?
The finale overturns what looks like a political setback for Homelander. Neuman, who was positioned to become vice president, is dead. But footage from the presidential bunker then surfaces, showing President-elect Robert Singer discussing the attempted assassination of Neuman. Singer is arrested, and Speaker Steven Calhoun becomes president. Homelander can now push his agenda through Calhoun rather than holding the office himself.
At the same time, the Boys lose their freedom and their ability to operate. The finale ends with the team being rounded up as Homelander’s allies move against dissenters. A mid-credits scene adds another threat: Soldier Boy is alive in a cryogenic chamber. The episode’s ending is a political and personal cliffhanger, not a settled victory or a completed plan.
Why did Butcher kill Victoria Neuman?
Neuman offers to work with the Boys, but Butcher kills her. Her death appears to remove Homelander’s path to power because she was set to become vice president. Sister Sage later tells Homelander the operation has gone according to plan: the fallout from Neuman’s death helps bring about Singer’s arrest and Calhoun’s succession.

The finale presents Butcher’s choice as the act that helps trigger the crisis, while Sage’s explanation reveals that the political consequences serve Homelander’s interests. It does not make Butcher’s decision a coordinated part of Sage’s strategy.
What was Sister Sage’s plan?
Sage turns a chain of events that seems to threaten Homelander into an opening for him to gain power. Neuman’s death and the leaked bunker footage put Singer in legal jeopardy; Singer’s arrest clears the way for Calhoun to become president. Homelander then has a president who supports his agenda.
The point is not that Homelander is formally elected. The finale depicts him as the power behind Calhoun, who holds the office. The Los Angeles Times described Homelander as effectively in charge, and the episode recap details how Sage’s strategy connects the succession crisis to his rise.

Did Ryan kill Mallory?
Yes. At the safe house, Grace Mallory tells Ryan about Homelander’s crimes and the danger he poses. Butcher tells Ryan that he may be the only person capable of stopping Homelander. Ryan tries to leave; Mallory attempts to stop him, and Ryan shoves her into a wall, killing her.
The scene is a panicked escape with fatal consequences. It does not establish Ryan’s lasting allegiance or show whether he can be reached afterward. His relationship with Butcher and his place in the conflict remain unresolved.
Is Homelander president now?
No. Calhoun becomes president after Singer’s arrest. Homelander is not shown winning an election or formally taking the presidency. Instead, he has influence over the new president and the government’s direction, giving him effective political control without the title.

That distinction matters: the finale’s danger comes from a government aligned with Homelander, not from a conventional transfer of the presidency to him.
Why did the finale resemble real-world political events?
The parallels to American politics are deliberate, but the timing of the episode’s release was not planned around the real-world events that coincided with it. In a July 18, 2024 interview, Los Angeles Times reporter Esther Zuckerman noted that the finale arrived during the Republican National Convention and days after an assassination attempt on former President Trump. Showrunner Eric Kripke said the timing was not planned. The production also added a title-card disclaimer saying that the fictional political violence was coincidental and unintentional, and that the producers oppose real-world violence.
Kripke acknowledged that Homelander draws on Trump as a reference point, telling the Los Angeles Times: “Yes, of course we’re making references to Trump and, in specific, his malignant narcissism and his egomania, and the fact that unlike last time, he’s now surrounded himself with very intelligent people who are going to potentially hand this guy the world and the chances of that are greater than they’ve ever been.”

The plot mechanics remain specific to the show: Sage supplies strategic intelligence, Singer’s arrest creates a succession crisis, and Calhoun becomes the president through whom Homelander can exercise power. Kripke also described Homelander’s psychology as insecure even at the height of his power: “Even if he’s literally king of the world, he’s going to feel inferior about it.” His ascent does not resolve that insecurity.

The scene confirms that Soldier Boy survived and is being kept in a cryogenic chamber. It does not show him escaping, joining Homelander, or making a plan. His survival sets up a future complication, but the scene alone does not reveal what role he will play.
Where do the Boys go from here?
The finale leaves the team at its lowest point: captured, politically outmatched, and facing a government-backed Supe movement. Kripke told the Los Angeles Times that, if the five seasons were imagined as a three-act film, season 4 ends at the low point at the end of Act 2. He said he needed something “apocalyptic” to befall the characters. The final season therefore begins from a deliberate darkest-hour cliffhanger rather than a resolved struggle.

Season 5 had already been announced as the series’ final season. The Associated Press reported Kripke’s announcement during season 4 promotion; TheWrap quoted him explaining his preference for a five-season span: “It gives you enough time to delve into the characters but it’s also not so long that it wears out its welcome.”
- Can Ryan be reached after Mallory’s death?
- Can the captured Boys escape and regroup?
- What role will Soldier Boy play?
- Will Sage remain aligned with Homelander, and how stable is his rule?
The finale establishes these questions without answering them. Amazon’s season guide identifies Prime Video as the series’ viewing destination.
