What the trailer sets up
Lionsgate published the official trailer on February 21, 2024, presenting the film as an adaptation of the Borderlands videogame franchise. Its synopsis centers on Lilith returning to Pandora to find Atlas’s missing daughter and joining forces with Roland, Tiny Tina, Krieg, Tannis and Claptrap.

The trailer description says: “Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets.” That wording sells a team adventure with danger, an unlikely ensemble and a mystery; it does not, on its own, establish how closely the film reproduces the games’ tone.
Does it feel like the games?
That depends on what “like the games” means. The franchise is broadly associated with cartoonish visuals, crude humor, eccentric characters, open exploration and procedurally generated weapons. Those traits offer useful points of comparison, but they are shorthand across a series, not a promise that every installment has the same tone or that a film trailer can represent every part of play.

Visual language
The trailer’s Pandora, outlandish cast and wasteland action invoke the games’ heightened, cartoonish world. That is a recognizable visual connection. A resemblance in costumes, setting or action, however, cannot show whether the film carries over the experience of exploring an open world and finding ever-changing loot.
Comic voice
Crude jokes and eccentric behavior are part of the franchise’s broad reputation, so comedy is central to the comparison—not an optional extra. The trailer offers glimpses of that comic register, but a trailer’s compressed edit is limited evidence of how jokes land across a full story, or whether the characters’ humor has the specificity and rhythm associated with the games.
Adaptation choices
The film brings together characters introduced across multiple games, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ February 2024 editorial overview. That makes the adaptation a combination of franchise elements rather than a straightforward indication that it follows one game’s plot. The same overview observed that the trailer appeared more focused on treasure hunting than the official synopsis’s missing-daughter rescue premise. Those are editorial readings of the trailer, not facts that settle what the finished story is about.

Bonk’s headline turns the games’ irreverent reputation into a pointed criticism: the trailer may be loud, comic and visually busy without offering much nuance. The contrast between the rescue-focused official synopsis and the treasure-hunt impression noted by Rotten Tomatoes gives that reading a concrete basis. Still, a trailer is a short promotional cut, not the film itself, and neither that headline nor the available descriptions prove a definitive game-by-game verdict.

The fairest conclusion is that the trailer signals recognizable Borderlands ingredients, while leaving the deeper question unresolved: whether the movie develops its characters and comedy with the particular flavor of the games, rather than merely echoing their surface.
