Dan and Dani Reilly’s daughter, Billie Vera Reilly, died at 10 days old in December 2024. The couple spoke about their loss in a televised segment on The Block, describing Billie’s time in neonatal intensive care and the support they received from the hospital team.
What happened to Dan and Dani Reilly’s baby Billie?
According to Nine’s report of the couple’s account, Billie experienced distress during birth. Dan and Dani said the cause would never be known and that Billie was deprived of oxygen. Nine reported that the NICU team’s efforts could not reverse the damage. The coverage does not establish a medical diagnosis or a cause, so neither should be inferred.
Billie spent her 10 days in the Women’s NICU at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. Dan and Dani said they were grateful for that time with her and for the care they and Billie received. What did Dan and Dani say about Billie on The Block?
Dan spoke about the care the NICU staff provided to Billie and the family. Nine quoted him saying: “We’re actually very grateful for those 10 days her time was spent in the NICU department (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) at the women’s hospital in Melbourne,” and, “What they did not only for us but other families, they do whatever is possible to make your time as good as possible.”
The couple’s comments focused on the time they had with Billie and the people who cared for them through it. In a separate Nine report about Dan’s appearance on Tipping Point, he praised the staff: “You never wish anyone to end up there, but if you do, these people are the best people in the world.” That quotation relates to the fundraiser appearance, not the Block segment. Dan and Dani created Billie’s Besties in Billie’s memory to support NICU families and raise awareness. Nine identifies the Women’s NICU as the fundraising beneficiary. The initiative grew from the couple’s experience of the care given to Billie and to them during her stay.
