Al Snow’s career was much bigger than the mannequin head he carried to the ring. “Head” made his ECW-era character instantly recognizable, but Snow had been wrestling since 1982, later trained talent on Tough Enough and at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), worked for TNA/Impact after WWE, and went on to buy OVW. The origin of Head is best understood as Snow’s own recollection of how he found a character-building idea—not as a verified clinical account.
How Al Snow’s career began before Head
OVW Academy identifies Lima, Ohio, as Snow’s hometown and says he wrestled his first match in 1982, at age 18. Those details establish how early his in-ring career began; they are not a complete match-by-match chronology.
That long runway matters to the story of Head. The prop became the shorthand many viewers remember, but it arrived within a career that had already started years earlier. Snow’s later work as a trainer and wrestling-promotion owner also shows why his professional identity cannot be reduced to one bizarre on-screen image.
How Al Snow says he came up with Head
In a 2023 interview with WTOP, Snow recalled developing the idea during his ECW period. He said he was reading about abnormal psychology when he found a styrofoam mannequin head in the ECW locker room. Snow connected it to a case study he had read about illness attributed to an object, and turned the head into a character-building prop.

Snow’s explanation is a remembered creative inspiration, not a clinical account of a diagnosis or a claim that a mannequin head caused a real illness. The distinction matters: the story explains how he recalls arriving at the gimmick, while the character itself was a performance choice.
Why Head became the part audiences remembered
Snow described taking Head into WWF/WWE and building audience participation around the call-and-response, “What does everybody want?” followed by “Head!” In WTOP’s account, the chant was a feature of the act: it gave the prop a role in the performance and made audience response part of the character.

That combination helps explain why the gimmick could feel so strange and still be easy to recognize. The head was more than an unusual object in the ring; it gave the crowd a simple cue and gave Snow a distinct persona. His phrase about being a “best kept secret” captures another part of the story. WTOP quoted him: “I had the moniker of ‘The Best Kept Secret in Professional Wrestling,’ which is a wonderful compliment for a year, then you’re like, ‘Hey, let’s start telling the secret,’”
Snow’s career as a trainer and talent developer
Snow’s wrestling work also included teaching performers. OVW Academy says he was head trainer for four seasons of MTV’s WWE reality series Tough Enough. It also says he served as OVW head trainer while the promotion was an official WWE developmental territory.

These roles place Snow on the other side of the performance: not just as a wrestler presenting a character, but as a trainer helping develop talent. The same OVW biography links that training chapter to his later ownership of the promotion.
What Al Snow did after WWE
OVW Academy says Snow departed WWE in 2008 and worked for TNA/Impact for nearly a decade. The source uses that approximate description, so it is more accurate to retain “nearly a decade” than to imply a precise start or end date.

In June 2018, according to OVW Academy, Snow bought OVW. The biography identifies him as the promotion’s owner; it does not, by itself, establish his present-day role. His career therefore moved from performing, to training, to ownership, even as Head remained the most instantly recognizable symbol of his wrestling persona.
