Their family history unfolds through a supposed childhood fire, betrayals by Bearer and a rivalry that sometimes gave way to partnership.
How WWE set up Kane as The Undertaker’s brother
Before Kane appeared, Paul Bearer repeatedly hinted that The Undertaker had a younger half-brother who was believed to have died in a fire. WWE’s account says the fire was allegedly started by The Undertaker when he was a child. That is the characters’ backstory, not a claim about the performers’ real lives.
At Badd Blood in 1997, Kane made his debut during The Undertaker’s Hell in a Cell match with Shawn Michaels. WWE recounts that Kane tore open the cell door and attacked The Undertaker, turning Bearer’s hints into a dramatic family reveal. WWE’s history of The Brothers of Destruction records the debut and the earlier tease.
The fire feud: Royal Rumble to Unforgiven
The family story quickly became a feud. At the 1998 Royal Rumble, WWE says Kane and Bearer attacked The Undertaker and set his casket ablaze. The conflict carried into WrestleMania XIV in March 1998, where The Undertaker defeated Kane after three Tombstone Piledrivers.

On April 26, 1998, at Unforgiven, the brothers met in their first Inferno Match. WWE records The Undertaker as the winner. These fire-centered scenes made the supposed childhood tragedy an ongoing part of their rivalry rather than a settled piece of backstory. WWE’s official chronology lists the match milestones.
Paul Bearer’s changing allegiance kept the conflict alive
Bearer was more than the person who connected the brothers’ family histories. His support shifted between them, repeatedly changing the shape of the rivalry. WWE’s Paul Bearer biography lays out his storyline connection to Kane and describes his shifting loyalties.

That pattern resurfaced in 2010, when Bearer betrayed The Undertaker and supported Kane in a Hell in a Cell match. Kane retained the World Heavyweight Championship. WWE’s match recap describes the betrayal and result.
The brothers sometimes fought on the same side
Their story was not only a succession of family betrayals. After years as rivals, The Undertaker and Kane reunited as a team on SmackDown on November 3, 2006. WWE’s Brothers of Destruction history identifies the reunion, showing how the characters could move from enemies to allies.

What makes their WWE family history bizarre?
The strangeness comes from the storyline’s combination of supernatural spectacle and shifting family loyalties: a half-brother presumed dead in a fire returns, Bearer’s role ties the brothers together, and that same manager repeatedly changes sides. The performers’ personal family histories are separate from this fictional WWE mythology.
