This is a shortlist of consequential stories, not a definitive global ranking: the available reporting is strongest on WWE and does not represent every promotion or region equally.
Why was WWE’s Raw deal with Netflix a major story?
In January 2024, WWE announced that Monday Night Raw would leave its existing U.S. cable home and move to Netflix in January 2025. The announcement mattered both for the scale of the rights agreement and for the prospect of a long-running weekly wrestling program moving to a global streaming service.
The Associated Press reported from a TKO regulatory filing that the ten-year agreement was worth more than $5 billion. Netflix also received an option to extend for another ten years and could opt out after the first five. WWE said the deal covered the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Latin America, with more countries and regions to follow over time; the territories were not all scheduled to switch at once. The Associated Press reported the deal’s terms on January 23, 2024.
TKO president and COO Mark Shapiro called it “transformative,” saying it would bring “weekly live appointment viewing to Netflix,” according to AP’s report. The move was part of a wider U.S. distribution shift: SmackDown moved from Fox to USA Network in 2024 under a five-year domestic media-rights partnership with NBCUniversal, which also planned four prime-time NBC specials per year beginning in the 2024/2025 season. The Netflix announcement came in 2024; Raw’s Netflix run began in January 2025.

What did Janel Grant’s lawsuit mean for WWE leadership?
Former WWE employee Janel Grant filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Connecticut in January 2024, accusing Vince McMahon and former WWE executive John Laurinaitis of sexual misconduct and naming WWE as a defendant. McMahon resigned as executive chairman of WWE parent TKO Group Holdings the following day. He denied wrongdoing.
The allegations and denial should be understood as claims made in the lawsuit and McMahon’s response, not as findings of fact. The immediate corporate consequence was McMahon’s departure from TKO’s executive chairmanship, while the case brought renewed public scrutiny to the company. AP’s January 27, 2024 report described the filing, resignation and denial.

How did WrestleMania XL shape the year?
WrestleMania XL, held over two nights at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, combined major in-ring developments with attendance and business records reported by WWE. Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns, delivering the title win WWE highlighted as a defining part of the event. WWE also pointed to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s in-ring return. WWE’s 2024 title-change retrospective includes Rhodes’ victory.
In its April 9, 2024 announcement, WWE called WrestleMania XL its most successful and highest-grossing event to that point. The following figures are WWE’s reported metrics, not independently audited audience measures:

WWE also reported 16,545 attendees at NXT Stand & Deliver. Its use of “views consumed” does not establish a count of unique viewers. WWE published the event figures and description on April 9, 2024.
What changed in the WWE–TNA relationship?
During 2024, wrestlers crossed between WWE’s NXT programming and TNA shows. TNA wrestler Jordynne Grace and Joe Hendry appeared on NXT, while NXT talent also appeared in TNA. The crossover was a notable change in the relationship between the promotions, bringing talent and audiences into contact across company lines.

The companies did not announce their formal agreement until January 2025. Their multi-year partnership announcement described the 2024 crossover as groundwork for the expanded relationship, so it is more accurate to treat the appearances as a 2024 trend and the partnership as a 2025 development. Claims about the partnership’s benefits and fan response in the announcement are the companies’ own characterizations.
