The U.S. version of The Biggest Loser had 17 seasons on NBC from 2004 to 2016, followed by a one-season USA Network revival in 2020. Its hosts included Caroline Rhea, Alison Sweeney and, in the final NBC season, longtime trainer Bob Harper. Harper and Jillian Michaels became the best-known trainers, but the roster changed over time. Here is who filled those roles and what is documented about their later work, alongside the renewed scrutiny of the show’s legacy.
Who hosted The Biggest Loser?
The hosting role changed as the U.S. series progressed. Caroline Rhea hosted in the early period; Alison Sweeney took over in season 4 and hosted through season 16; Bob Harper became host in season 17 while also training contestants at points during that season.
| Host | Role on the U.S. series | What the available sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Caroline Rhea | Early host | TV Guide lists her as host. Netflix identifies Sweeney as host beginning in season 4, placing Rhea in the earlier period; the sources cited here do not establish Rhea’s exact final season. TV Guide cast listing; Netflix Tudum. |
| Alison Sweeney | Host, seasons 4–16 | Netflix’s 2025 retrospective identifies her as host for those seasons. Netflix Tudum. |
| Bob Harper | Trainer and season 17 host | Apple TV’s season 17 listing describes Harper as the host and notes that he continued training contestants at points in the season. Apple TV season listing. |
This timeline refers to the U.S. edition, not the international adaptations of the franchise. Netflix’s 2025 retrospective describes the original NBC run as 17 seasons from 2004 to 2016 and the USA Network revival as one season in 2020; it also reports that the show is no longer on television. Where are the best-known trainers now?
Bob Harper
Harper moved from trainer to host for season 17. Us Weekly reported in August 2025 that he suffered a heart attack in 2017, retired from training and returned to reality television as a contestant on the third season of The Traitors in 2025. Those are dated updates, not a complete account of his activities in October 2026. Us Weekly, Aug. 24, 2025.

Jillian Michaels
Michaels became one of the show’s signature trainers, appearing in its early seasons, leaving and later returning. Us Weekly reported that her run ended in 2013. Her official biography describes her as a media personality, author and entrepreneur, and lists a podcast, fitness app, workout DVDs and books. The latter describes her public work as presented on her own site; it does not establish the current availability of every listed project. Which other trainers appeared on the show?
The trainer lineup rotated. TV Guide’s cast listing includes Dolvett Quince, Jennifer Widerstrom, Kim Lyons, Anna Kournikova, Jessie Pavelka, Brett Hoebel and Cara Castronuova alongside Harper and Michaels. It is a selected cast listing, not a season-by-season guide. TV Guide cast listing.

Netflix’s three-episode documentary Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser premiered on Aug. 15, 2025. It includes former contestants, producers, Harper and Sweeney, and examines the series’ cultural impact and complicated legacy. Netflix says participants discuss extreme weight-loss practices and later effects including disordered eating and mental-health issues. Those are accounts presented by participants and the documentary, not a claim that every contestant had the same experience. Netflix Tudum.

Netflix’s retrospective also reports that season 15 winner Rachel Frederickson weighed 105 pounds at the finale. It says the show publicly acknowledged that caffeine pills had been used in violation of its rules, and that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department opened an inquiry into former contestants’ allegations in 2016. The 105-pound figure belongs to Frederickson’s finale, not to a health recommendation. The reported inquiry and allegations should not be mistaken for an established finding about every claim.
Director Skye Borgman, speaking about the documentary in a podcast interview quoted by Netflix, said: “There’s just a lot of tunnel vision when you have a TV show and you’re not really thinking about these people’s health and well-being — you’re thinking more about how this is going to play on TV.” Netflix Tudum.
