Spoilers for May Cobb’s novel and season one of the television adaptation. The series keeps the premise of Sophie entering Margo’s wealthy Texas circle as a murder investigation unfolds, but changes key backstories, the pregnancy reveal, the killer, character fates, and the ending. Most importantly, the novel reveals Jill killed Abby and has Jill kill Margo; the series makes Margo Abby’s killer and leaves her alive.

Netflix identifies the series as an adaptation of May Cobb’s 2021 novel, with Rebecca Cutter as creator, showrunner, and writer, and Cobb as an executive producer. The comparison below focuses on season one and the novel; the two versions diverge most sharply in the murder solution and the consequences that follow.

How Sophie’s background and the affairs change

In Cobb’s novel, Sophie moves from Chicago to Texas and is a former magazine editor. The show changes her origin to Boston. Us Weekly’s comparison also notes that the series gives less focus to Sophie’s drinking, while making her drunk-driving arrest part of the finale’s backstory.

The affairs involving housewives and high-school boys are also handled differently. In the novel, the boys are high-school students; in the series, the boys clarify that they are 18, according to Us Weekly’s comparison.

Who is pregnant, and who has an abortion?

The pregnancy and abortion plot changes the identity of the pregnant woman and becomes central to the difference in the murder story.

Novel Television series
Abby is pregnant with Brad’s baby and refuses an abortion. Us Weekly describes this as the trigger for her murder. Abby is secretly pregnant, but the later reveal is that Margo had an abortion after Brad impregnated her.

Who killed Abby?

In the novel, Jill lures Abby out and kills her with one of Margo’s guns. In the show, Margo killed Abby, and Sophie realizes that Margo let her take the blame.

The change was deliberate. In a July 31, 2025 interview with TheWrap, Cutter said she wanted to make Margo the killer despite her being an obvious suspect, and described using red herrings to make the reveal work. She called the choice a major adaptation risk: “I thought, God, if we could get away with changing the killer to Margo when she’s the most obvious suspect the entire time — if I could pull that off, that would be pretty huge,”

Who survives, and what other storylines are added?

The change in Abby’s killer also changes Margo’s fate. In the novel, Jill kills Margo because of Margo’s romance with Brad. Margo survives the first season of the show and remains central to the continuing story.

The television version adds deaths and a hostage plot that are not part of the novel’s outlined comparison:

  • Jill and Starr die in the series.
  • A youth pastor takes two underage girls hostage and dies by suicide.
  • Police determine that the pastor was responsible for the kidnappings, not Abby’s murder.

In the novel, Sophie nearly dies while investigating before Jill is apprehended.

How the endings differ

The novel jumps forward two months to show Sophie and Graham separated after Sophie’s affair. The show ends sooner: Sophie tells Graham about the affair, then discovers that Margo killed Abby. That reveal leaves the central conflict open rather than resolving it as the novel does.

Cutter told TheWrap that the changed reveal and finale gave the leads a complicated story engine for a possible continuation. She summed up her approach to the finale by saying, “I went a little bonkers.” Netflix’s 2025 guide confirms the show has eight episodes; the season-one ending’s unresolved conflict is a significant departure from the novel’s time-jump ending.

Should you read the novel after watching the series?

Yes, if you want a substantially different murder solution and character outcomes rather than a scene-by-scene version of the show. The premise and social circle remain recognizable, but the book’s Abby-pregnancy reveal, Jill-as-killer twist, and Margo’s death make the novel’s final stretch meaningfully different. You can read Netflix’s overview of the adaptation and source novel before choosing the book.

For a side-by-side spoiler breakdown of the specific changes, see Us Weekly’s comparison of the show and May Cobb’s book. Netflix’s Media Center listing credits Cutter in the series’ leadership and Cobb as an executive producer.
