Yes. Zoe Perry is Laurie Metcalf’s daughter. Metcalf played Mary Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, while Perry played a younger Mary in its prequel, Young Sheldon. Their real-life relationship is separate from the fictional Cooper family, but it makes the shared role an unusual mother-daughter casting connection.
How are Laurie Metcalf and Zoe Perry related?
They are mother and daughter off-screen. In the television story, they portray the same character at different points in her life—not mother and daughter. Channel 4’s character biographies identify Perry as the younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon.
Who played Mary Cooper in each series?
| Series | Performer | Role |
|---|---|---|
| The Big Bang Theory | Laurie Metcalf | Mary Cooper, Sheldon’s mother |
| Young Sheldon | Zoe Perry | A younger Mary Cooper |
Young Sheldon follows Sheldon Cooper’s childhood and the Cooper family. Its 2017 CBS Entertainment series announcement lists Perry among the cast. The shared role connects the prequel’s younger Mary with the character Metcalf played in The Big Bang Theory.
What did Zoe Perry say about taking the role?
In a May 8, 2024 TVLine interview, Perry reflected on auditioning to play a younger version of a character her mother had portrayed. She acknowledged the pressure of comparisons while expressing gratitude for the opportunity: “I had such a privileged position going into that audition, and was so honored that I was offered the opportunity to audition,”

Why is the casting connection notable?
The connection works on two levels: Perry is Metcalf’s daughter in real life, and she portrays a younger version of Metcalf’s character in the same television universe. It is a casting handoff across generations, not a claim that the performers’ real-life relationship is part of the Cooper family story.
