The best women-led revenge films put a woman’s grievance, choices, and pursuit of retribution at the center—not merely in the cast. Ranked here for protagonist agency, point of view, filmmaking, and thematic complexity, these eight films range from classic suspense to stylized action, psychological drama, and teen comedy. The order is an editorial judgment, not a definitive canon.
If you’re looking for female revenge movies that aren’t about sexual assault, start with Diabolique or Do Revenge: their revenge plots turn on betrayal and social cruelty instead. Other picks address sexual violence and trauma directly; content notes below flag that where the sources establish it.
How the ranking works
Each film is assessed by how much its central woman drives the revenge plot, how distinctly the story gives her a point of view, and how effectively its genre craft supports its themes. A film can be an excellent recommendation without offering uncomplicated catharsis. Where revenge is only part of a more unsettling story, that boundary is made clear.
1. Lady Vengeance (2005)
Park Chan-wook’s Korean thriller gives Lee Geum-ja a revenge story shaped by wrongful conviction, imprisonment, and the people who harmed her. After years in prison for a murder she did not commit, she seeks to clear her name and confront those responsible. Her decisions propel the film, but the moral stakes reach beyond personal payback: revenge takes on collective and difficult dimensions rather than delivering a simple release. The BFI’s discussion places the film in the lineage of influential revenge cinema and singles out its distinctive female avenger. [BFI]

2. Diabolique (1955)
Henri-Georges Clouzot’s French suspense classic builds its revenge plot around an alliance between two women: the wife and mistress of a sadistic boarding-school headmaster. Their shared plan, and the suspenseful mechanics of carrying it out, make this one of the clearest fits for a women-led revenge list. Its grievance is not sexual assault, and its appeal lies in the uneasy partnership and carefully controlled suspense rather than action spectacle. Criterion’s edition includes a restoration, commentary, interviews, a trailer, and an essay. [Criterion Collection]
3. Kill Bill: Volumes 1 and 2 (2003–04)
The Bride’s extended campaign for revenge gives both volumes a forceful central protagonist and a plot organized around her pursuit. This is stylized action, not realist trauma drama: martial-arts cinema, yakuza stories, and Westerns inform its scale and visual language. The BFI also notes the influence of Lady Snowblood on Kill Bill, an important connection for viewers interested in the genre’s cinematic lineage. [BFI] [TIME]

4. Promising Young Woman (2020)
Emerald Fennell’s film follows Cassie, played by Carey Mulligan, as she seeks revenge over a sexual assault dating back to her college years. Its perspective matters as much as the premise: the story does not reduce grief or relationships to a triumphant payback fantasy. In a 12 April 2021 Sight and Sound interview, Fennell said, “I wanted to write a revenge movie that felt like it had a real woman at the centre of it.” She also described it as “a film about grief and love and friendship as much as it is about getting revenge.” [BFI Sight and Sound]
5. Do Revenge (2022)
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s teen comedy-thriller pairs Drea and Eleanor, who form a secret friendship to get revenge on each other’s tormentors. The mutual arrangement gives both young women agency and makes revenge a source of shifting alliances as well as comic set pieces. It is the lightest-toned option here, though its high-school cruelty still supplies the grievance. Rotten Tomatoes records a 1 hour 58 minute runtime and a streaming release date of 16 September 2022; that historical release date does not establish where the film is currently available. 6. Revenge (2017)
Coralie Fargeat’s thriller follows Jen, played by Matilda Lutz, after she survives an attack and returns intent on revenge. BFI Player describes it as a feminist subversion of the revenge thriller, with Jen’s return driving the action. The same listing carries an 18 certificate and warns of strong bloody violence, gore, and sexual violence: this is an especially intense choice, not a recommendation for viewers seeking a less disturbing route into the genre. The BFI Player page reviewed is UK-specific, and its availability may change. [BFI Player]
7. Elle (2016)
In this provocative French psychological drama, Isabelle Huppert’s character sets out to identify and turn the tables on an attacker. That premise puts her at the center of a response to violence, but the BFI cautions against treating the film as a conventional revenge drama. Its unsettling treatment makes it a boundary case: better suited to viewers seeking morally complicated psychological cinema than a straightforward avenger’s journey. [BFI]

8. Lady Snowblood (1973)
TIME’s historical survey includes Lady Snowblood among its female-revenge selections, and the BFI discusses its influence on Kill Bill. It offers a useful route into the international history of stylized revenge cinema, rather than the contemporary realist mode. The available source material supports that lineage and its place in the genre, but does not establish enough detail here to rank its protagonist’s agency or thematic complexity as fully as the films above. [TIME] [BFI]
Choose by tone and grievance
- For revenge without a sexual-assault-centered premise: Diabolique builds on betrayal, while Do Revenge turns social torment into teen comedy-thriller.
- For wrong conviction and broader moral questions: choose Lady Vengeance.
- For maximalist action: the two Kill Bill volumes offer stylized, genre-mixing revenge.
- For psychological unease: Elle is deliberately less conventional.
- For stories involving sexual violence: Promising Young Woman and Revenge both address it; the latter’s BFI Player listing explicitly warns of strong violence, gore, and sexual violence.
There is no single definitive canon of women-led revenge films. TIME’s 2014 selection spans countries and tones, while the BFI’s list offers another selective critical frame; both are useful context, not consensus rankings. [TIME] [BFI]
