For a tense mystery, a high-stakes chase or a more psychological kind of suspense, Netflix’s thriller selection covers several different moods. These seven picks come from Netflix Tudum’s 23-title thriller and suspense guide, published August 10, 2026; they are a curated selection, not a ranked verdict on which film is best. Netflix notes that recommendation counts may vary by region, so check your local catalog before settling on a title.
Choose by the kind of suspense you want
Netflix Tudum describes thrillers as unpredictable stories built around tension. That makes the useful question less “Which one is objectively best?” and more “What kind of unease or excitement am I in the mood for?” The films below range from contained action to speculative mystery and creature-feature horror.

For a contained, high-stakes action story: Carry-On
A TSA agent at LAX faces an airport threat in this action thriller. The airport setting gives the danger a clear, immediate focus, making it a fit for viewers who want a tense setup and forward-moving action.
For a speculative mystery: The Call
Two women communicate by phone across a 20-year gap, and their choices affect both timelines. Pick it if you like mysteries with a science-fiction premise rather than a conventional investigation. Tudum lists the film at 1 hour 52 minutes and rates it TV-MA.

For a crime drama centered on victims: Woman of the Hour
Anna Kendrick’s film follows a woman appearing on The Dating Game who encounters serial killer Rodney Alcala. Based on a true story, it is a crime drama that gives attention to victims as well as the central encounter; it is not a documentary. Tudum lists its runtime as 1 hour 34 minutes and its rating as R.
For character-focused psychological tension: Ballad of a Small Player
Colin Farrell plays a debt-ridden gambler in Macau who is pursued by a private investigator. Directed by Edward Berger, the film adapts Lawrence Osborne’s 2014 novel. Its focus on a character under pressure makes it a stronger match for viewers after psychological tension than nonstop action.
Rank #2
For gritty crime action: Havoc
Tom Hardy plays a detective drawn into the criminal underworld after a drug deal goes wrong. Choose it for a grim crime premise and kinetic action rather than a quiet, puzzle-led mystery.
For a closed-setting mystery: The Woman in Cabin 10
A travel journalist aboard a superyacht witnesses someone go overboard, but is told that every passenger is accounted for. Based on Ruth Ware’s 2016 novel, it suits viewers who enjoy an isolated setting, a suspicious disappearance and questions about what the protagonist can trust. If the story works for you, Ware’s novel is a natural read-after-watch option.
Rank #3
For suspense with creature-feature horror: Under Paris
A giant shark appears in the Seine ahead of a triathlon. This is the pick for viewers who want a disaster-scale threat and are comfortable with action-horror and creature-feature elements; it is the least natural choice for someone looking to avoid horror.

- Want a straightforward threat? Start with Carry-On for an airport crisis or Havoc for crime action.
- Prefer a mystery to action? Try The Call for its time-crossing premise or The Woman in Cabin 10 for a suspicious event in a closed setting.
- Want crime grounded in real events? Choose Woman of the Hour, keeping in mind that it is a dramatized film rather than a documentary.
- Looking for psychological unease? Ballad of a Small Player centers on a gambler’s precarious situation.
- Check your tolerance for horror before choosing. Under Paris builds its threat around a giant shark; it is not simply a conventional crime thriller.
For broader browsing, Netflix’s thriller collection groups films across themes such as murder, heists, disasters and noir. Its psychological thriller collection focuses on unseen dangers, untrustworthy characters and unsettling suspense.
