Metacritic’s 2024 best-reviewed list, published January 6, 2025, puts Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude’s Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World at the top with a 95 Metascore. The same film also received Metacritic’s 2024 distinctions for international film, narrative film, and comedy. The next entries listed by Metacritic were Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell at 94, followed by All We Imagine as Light and No Other Land, each at 93. Metacritic describes Metascore as a weighted average of professional critics’ scores, displayed on a 100-point scale.
What was Rotten Tomatoes’ best movie of 2024?
Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 Golden Tomato Award for Best Movies went to Dune: Part Two. Its nominees also included Anora, Challengers, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Hit Man, Inside Out 2, Love Lies Bleeding, The Substance, Wicked, and The Wild Robot. The awards use an adjusted formula that considers both Tomatometer score and the number of critics’ reviews; they are not simply a list sorted by the displayed percentage. Why Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes can choose different winners
Their numbers measure different things. Metascore is a weighted average of critics’ scores. The Tomatometer is the percentage of professional critics’ reviews that are positive, rather than an average rating. A high Tomatometer indicates that many reviews are positive; it does not show how enthusiastic those critics were on average. Rotten Tomatoes’ Golden Tomato ranking adds review volume to its adjusted award formula.

Because the scales and ranking rules differ, the scores should not be averaged or treated as interchangeable. A “best” claim is most useful when it names the publisher and measure.
What counted as an eligible movie on Metacritic?
Metacritic’s published rules required at least seven professional critic reviews. Films had to be released between January 1 and December 31, 2024, in at least one U.S. theater or directly to streaming or digital/VOD. Shorts and reissues were excluded. How to read Rotten Tomatoes ratings
Rotten Tomatoes calls a movie Fresh when at least 60% of its critic reviews are positive. Certified Fresh is a separate designation with additional thresholds: at least 75% on the Tomatometer, at least five reviews from Top Critics, and a minimum review count of 80 for wide releases or 40 for limited-release or streaming films. How AFI’s selections add another perspective
The American Film Institute’s top-ten list is a curated institutional selection rather than a ranked average of critics’ scores. Among its 2024 selections, as reported by Rotten Tomatoes, were Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, A Real Pain, and Wicked.
