The Best Netflix Alternatives: Max, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu and More

There is no universal Netflix replacement. Compare Max, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV, Paramount+, Peacock, and Tubi by documentary interests, ads, live TV, bundles, plan limits, and cost—not by headline price alone.

There is no single service that universally replaces Netflix. Choose Max for premium television, films, and documentaries; Prime Video for Amazon Prime households and broad entertainment; Disney+ for families and major franchises; Hulu for current-season television; Apple TV for commercial-free originals; Paramount+ for CBS, Showtime, and sports; Peacock for NBC, Bravo, and live events; or Tubi for free legal streaming with ads.

For documentary viewers, the best starting point is Max for prestige nonfiction, Apple TV for Apple Originals, Disney+ for National Geographic and family viewing, and Tubi when avoiding another monthly bill matters most. Recommendations and prices are U.S.-specific and volatile, so verify the official checkout page before subscribing.

There is no single service that universally replaces Netflix. The right choice depends on what you actually watch. Choose Max for premium scripted television, films, and documentaries; Prime Video if you already pay for Amazon Prime or want a broad mix; Disney+ for family viewing and major franchises; Hulu for current-season television; Apple TV for a smaller, commercial-free originals catalog; Paramount+ for CBS, Showtime, sports, and legacy franchises; Peacock for NBC, Bravo, and live events; or Tubi if your priority is free, legal streaming with ads.

For documentary viewers, start with the identity of the nonfiction you want: HBO- and Warner Bros.-style documentaries point toward Max, Apple Originals toward Apple TV, National Geographic programming and family-friendly factual viewing toward Disney+, and free catalogue browsing toward Tubi. These are U.S.-specific recommendations. Catalogs, sports rights, advertisements, device support, and prices change, so confirm the service’s checkout page before subscribing.

Price note: The prices below are a U.S. snapshot from official service pages reviewed on August 12, 2026. They are not directly comparable tiers: some include ads, some include downloads or live programming, and Prime Video mixes included content with rentals, purchases, and separately billed channels.

The best Netflix alternatives at a glance

Service Best for U.S. plan snapshot Main limitation
Max Prestige television, major films, and premium documentaries Basic with Ads $9.99/month; Standard $16.99; Premium $20.99 Its catalog rotates, and not every HBO or Warner Bros. title is permanently available.
Prime Video Households already using Amazon Prime and viewers who want breadth Membership and add-on pricing varies Not every title displayed in the app is included with the base membership.
Disney+ Families and Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic fans Disney+/Hulu bundles begin at $12.99/month with ads; the premium bundle begins at $19.99/month It is focused rather than a general replacement for Netflix’s entire mix.
Hulu Current-season television, Hulu Originals, and a broad TV-first catalog Varies by standalone plan, bundle, and Hulu + Live TV selection Ads, live channels, blackouts, and availability vary by plan and ZIP code.
Apple TV A focused catalog of commercial-free Apple Originals $12.99/month after a seven-day trial There is less of a traditional back catalog than on broader services.
Paramount+ CBS, Showtime, sports, Nickelodeon, and Paramount franchises Essential $8.99/month; Premium $13.99/month Sports and live CBS access depend on the plan, event, and location.
Peacock NBC, Bravo, Universal-related entertainment, and selected live events Premium $10.99/month or $109.99/year; Premium Plus $16.99/month or $169.99/year Premium Plus still has limited exceptions to its reduced-ad offering.
Tubi Free, legal streaming No subscription required; advertising-supported There is no ad-free option, and its catalog is more variable than a paid service’s.

Which Netflix alternative should you choose?

1. Max: best overall for prestige television, films, and documentaries

Max is the strongest first choice if your Netflix habit is mostly high-profile dramas, comedies, films, documentaries, and other premium scripted programming. Its content identity is closer to a premium film-and-television service than to an everything-for-everyone catalogue.

For DocumentaryTube readers, Max makes the most sense when you want polished investigative, cultural, historical, or personality-led nonfiction alongside premium entertainment. It is not safe to assume that every HBO or Warner Bros. title remains available indefinitely; licensing and rotation still apply.

  • Basic with Ads: $9.99/month.
  • Standard: $16.99/month, with 1080p and downloads.
  • Premium: $20.99/month, adding 4K, Dolby Atmos where available, and four simultaneous streams.

Standard and Premium also include selected live sports. That can make Max more useful than a documentary-only service for a household that wants both premium on-demand programming and some live content, but the sports offering is not universal or permanent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Max if: you want one paid replacement centered on premium television and films, with documentaries as part of that broader identity.

2. Prime Video: best value when you already use Amazon Prime

Prime Video is a logical Netflix alternative for households that already pay for Amazon Prime and want video benefits alongside the wider membership. It offers a broad mixture of general entertainment and also functions as a storefront and channel platform.

That last point is important. The Prime Video interface can show titles that are included, available to rent, available to purchase, or supplied through a separately billed channel. Seeing a film or series in the app does not prove that it is included with the base membership. Check the title page for the exact billing status before treating Prime Video as a cheaper substitute.

Prime Video suits documentary viewers who browse widely and are willing to check whether a particular film is included, rented, purchased, or supplied through an add-on. It is less suitable if you want a tightly curated service where the subscription relationship is obvious at a glance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Prime Video if: you already use Amazon Prime, value household utility beyond streaming, or want a broad marketplace rather than a narrowly defined catalogue.

3. Disney+: best for families and franchise-heavy households

Disney+ is the clearest choice for households built around Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and family viewing. Its National Geographic programming also gives documentary fans a useful factual and nature-oriented lane, especially when the same household is watching animated films and major franchises.

Disney+ is not a complete replacement for Netflix if your viewing spans adult dramas, international television, reality programming, stand-up, and unrelated documentaries. It replaces the parts of Netflix that overlap with its own brands particularly well.

Disney’s subscription tiers vary, and eligible plans and devices can support 4K UHD and HDR. A Disney+/Hulu bundle begins at $12.99/month for ad-supported access, while the premium bundle begins at $19.99/month according to the official bundle page reviewed for this comparison. Confirm which Disney+ and Hulu tiers those prices contain before comparing the bundle with two separate subscriptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Disney+ if: family viewing, recognizable franchises, and National Geographic content matter more than having a broad adult catalogue.

4. Hulu: best for current-season television and a broad TV mix

Hulu is a better Netflix alternative for viewers who want television as it airs or shortly afterward, rather than a service focused mainly on original series. Its U.S. offering highlights full seasons, current episodes, Hulu Originals, classic favorites, films, and kids programming.

Hulu can also be combined with Disney+ and, through other bundle structures, ESPN-related programming. Hulu + Live TV adds a different product category: channel availability, local coverage, regional restrictions, sports blackouts, and advertising behavior can vary by plan and ZIP code. Do not compare Hulu + Live TV with a basic on-demand subscription as though they were equivalent.

For documentary viewers, Hulu works well when nonfiction is part of a wider current-TV habit. It is less predictable as a dedicated documentary replacement because its value is primarily the combination of current television, originals, and a broad TV catalogue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Hulu if: you want current episodes, full television seasons, Hulu Originals, or a combined on-demand and live-TV setup.

5. Apple TV: best for a focused originals catalog

Apple TV is the most focused paid option in this list. The service is built around Apple Originals, including dramas, comedies, science fiction, documentaries, and films, rather than a huge rotating back catalogue.

Apple lists the service at $12.99/month after a seven-day trial. It says Apple Originals are commercial-free and that the subscription can be shared with up to five family members. Those features make Apple TV attractive to viewers who would rather pay for a concentrated slate of high-quality originals than search through a very large library.

Use Apple TV for the streaming service. Apple TV 4K is separate hardware, not a different subscription tier and not a requirement for using the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Apple TV if: you prefer commercial-free original programming and do not need a large general-purpose back catalogue.

6. Paramount+: best for CBS, Showtime, sports, and familiar franchises

Paramount+ is a strong targeted alternative for viewers who want CBS programming, Showtime, selected sports, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, BET, and Paramount films and franchises in one service.

  • Essential: $8.99/month, with an ad-supported catalogue and selected sports access.
  • Premium: $13.99/month, with no ads except on live television, downloads, 4K on eligible titles, CBS live access, and Showtime.

Sports rights and live-TV access are subject to the event, location, and plan. Premium is not a promise that every live broadcast will be ad-free, and 4K applies only where the title, plan, device, and stream support it.

Pick Paramount+ if: the content you would miss most from traditional television is on CBS, Showtime, Nickelodeon, or the Paramount family of brands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Peacock: best for NBCUniversal programming and selected live events

Peacock is most useful as a targeted replacement for NBC and Bravo programming, selected live sports and events, hit films, Peacock Originals, and Universal-related entertainment. It is a particularly sensible choice for viewers who want reality and network programming alongside films and live event coverage.

Peacock Premium is listed at $10.99/month or $109.99/year. Premium Plus is listed at $16.99/month or $169.99/year. The service advertises downloads and reduced advertising on Premium Plus, but Premium Plus is not literally free of advertising for every channel, live event, or program; limited exceptions apply.

Pick Peacock if: NBC, Bravo, live events, or selected Universal content is more important to you than a general replacement for every type of Netflix programming.

8. Tubi: best free and legal Netflix alternative

Tubi is the clearest recommendation when the goal is to stop paying a monthly streaming bill. Tubi says no subscription is required, offers thousands of movies and television shows, works on major connected-TV devices, and is funded by advertising. Its help center describes the service as free and legal and says it currently has no ad-free option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tubi can be a good place to find documentaries, older films, and television without adding another paid subscription, but the trade-off is central to the decision: you watch with ads, and the catalogue is not a like-for-like substitute for Netflix Originals. Availability can also change.

Pick Tubi if: free, legal access matters more than avoiding ads, getting new releases, or keeping a stable catalogue.

The best choice for different kinds of documentary viewers

Your priority Start with Why
Premium investigative or cultural documentaries alongside prestige TV Max Its identity is built around premium television and films, with documentaries in that wider mix.
Commercial-free original nonfiction and a smaller curated service Apple TV Apple focuses on Originals and says those programs are commercial-free.
Nature, science, history, and family-friendly factual programming Disney+ National Geographic sits alongside Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars content.
Broad browsing, especially if Prime is already in the household Prime Video Its mixture of included titles, rentals, purchases, and channels offers breadth, but requires careful price checking.
Documentaries without another monthly bill Tubi It is free and legal, with advertising instead of a subscription fee.
Documentaries as part of current television and full-season viewing Hulu Its emphasis is current episodes, full seasons, Hulu Originals, and a broad TV mix.

No mainstream service above should be treated as a specialist documentary replacement by default. Library-supported services such as Kanopy and film-focused services such as Criterion Channel or MUBI may be worth investigating for a more specialized audience, but their current U.S. availability, pricing, catalogues, and partner arrangements were not verified for this comparison.

How to choose without paying for the wrong service

  1. Write down three to five must-watch titles. Include the documentary, series, or film you are actually leaving Netflix for. A service’s brand reputation is less useful than whether your specific titles are available.
  2. Search the service before subscribing. Check the exact title, season, and episode. On Prime Video in particular, distinguish “included” from rental, purchase, or channel access. A title may also be available only in one country.
  3. Decide whether ads are acceptable. The cheapest tier is not necessarily the best value if interruptions are unacceptable. Compare like with like: an ad-supported plan with another ad-supported plan, and an on-demand plan with another on-demand plan.
  4. Check the screens and quality you need. If you watch on several household screens, compare simultaneous streams. If 4K or HDR matters, verify the plan, title, device, and television separately. Max, Disney+, and Paramount+ all qualify higher-quality playback in ways that depend on the plan or equipment.
  5. Separate live TV from on-demand streaming. Hulu + Live TV, CBS live access, Peacock live events, and selected Max sports are not interchangeable with a normal on-demand catalogue. Check local channels, event restrictions, blackouts, and the ZIP-code result where applicable.
  6. Check bundle contents, not just the headline price. A Disney+/Hulu bundle may be useful, and Hulu also describes bundles involving Disney+ and ESPN-related programming. Max also documents a Disney+/Hulu/Max bundle. Compare the exact included tiers, ad policies, downloads, and live features before deciding that a bundle is cheaper.
  7. Use a trial only when the terms are clear. Apple TV lists a seven-day trial, but do not assume another service offers the same arrangement. Record the renewal date and check the cancellation terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

The cheapest strategy is usually rotation

Keeping every service year-round is rarely necessary. Subscribe when the series, documentary collection, film, or sports season you want is available, watch it, and cancel before the next billing date if the service’s terms permit. Return later when the next worthwhile release arrives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical rotation might look like this:

  • Keep Tubi as a free, ad-supported baseline.
  • Add Max for a month or two when premium documentaries and television are your priority.
  • Use Apple TV for a concentrated run of originals rather than paying for a large back catalogue you will not browse.
  • Choose Disney+ or a Disney+/Hulu bundle during a family-viewing period.
  • Use Paramount+ or Peacock around the specific sports, live events, or network seasons you want.

Bundles can reduce the number of separate bills, but they can also make it easier to keep services you are not using. The correct comparison is the total cost of the exact tiers you would otherwise buy, including ads and the features you actually need.

Do you need a streaming device?

No. A Netflix alternative does not require a particular piece of hardware. If your television already has a supported app and plays it reliably, you can use that setup. An external player becomes useful when the television’s interface is slow, an app is unavailable, updates have stopped, or you want one consistent interface across several services.

If the new service buffers, diagnose the problem before buying anything

Changing from Netflix to another service will not automatically fix buffering. First identify whether the problem follows the service or the whole setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Every service buffers: investigate the internet connection, Wi-Fi coverage, router, household congestion, or the television/player.
  • Only one service buffers: update or restart that app, check its service status, sign out and back in, and test another device. The issue may be app-specific or account-related.
  • Only one title or live event fails: check plan, location, rights, blackout, and live-event restrictions. A device upgrade cannot restore content that the service does not have rights to show.
  • The app works on another device: the television software, player, or app installation is the likely place to start.
  • The Windows computer itself is slow: check storage, updates, background applications, and system health. A Windows performance or cleanup tool such as Outbyte PC Repair may address general Windows performance, disk-space, privacy, or system issues according to its product information, but it is not evidence of an ISP, Wi-Fi, streaming-service, or content-rights fix. Do not use it as a promise to cure buffering without diagnosing the bottleneck.

StreamNeo is not included as a Netflix alternative because it solves a different problem: its official positioning is a cloud service for continuously looping a creator’s own prerecorded or cleared video as a YouTube Live stream, with automatic recovery and no always-on computer requirement. That is a creator-broadcasting workflow, not a consumer video-on-demand subscription.

The bottom line

Choose by viewing behavior, not by the word “alternative.” Max is the best starting point for premium documentaries, television, and films. Apple TV is better for a focused run of commercial-free originals, Disney+ for family and National Geographic viewing, Prime Video for an existing Amazon household, Hulu for current television, Paramount+ for CBS and Showtime, Peacock for NBC and live events, and Tubi when free legal streaming matters most. If none has enough of what you watch, rotate services or investigate a specialist documentary and film platform rather than paying for several broad catalogues at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Netflix alternative is best for documentaries?

For premium documentaries and prestige television, start with Max. Apple TV is a strong alternative for commercial-free Apple Originals, Disney+ fits National Geographic and family-friendly factual viewing, and Tubi is the free option if you accept advertising. The best choice depends on the specific documentaries you want to watch.

Is Tubi a genuinely free and legal Netflix alternative?

Yes. Tubi says no subscription is required and describes its service as free and legal, but it is supported by advertising and currently has no ad-free option. Its catalogue is not a complete replacement for Netflix Originals and can change.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Amazon Prime include everything shown on Prime Video?

No. Prime Video can display titles that are included with the membership alongside rentals, purchases, and separately billed channels. Check the title page and billing label before assuming a film or documentary is included.

Can Disney+ fully replace Netflix?

No single service replaces Netflix’s entire catalogue. Disney+ is strongest for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and family viewing, while Max, Hulu, Apple TV, Paramount+, Peacock, and Tubi serve different content identities and viewing habits.

The Bottom Line

Best overall starting point: Max for premium documentaries, television, and films. Choose Apple TV for focused commercial-free originals, Disney+ for family and National Geographic programming, Prime Video for Amazon households, Hulu for current TV, Paramount+ for CBS and Showtime, Peacock for NBC and live events, or Tubi for free legal streaming with ads.
