Looking back from October 8, 2026, the strongest critic-informed pick for a 2025 standout is One Battle After Another. It topped Metacritic’s year-end ranking with a 95 Metascore, appeared prominently in selections by Associated Press film writers, and placed first in BFI Sight and Sound’s international critics’ poll. That is notable convergence, not a unanimous or objective verdict.
This is a retrospective of films released during calendar 2025, not a live “so far” update. Release years can differ by territory: festival premieres and later local openings may fall in different calendar years. The sources below use different eligibility rules and editorial methods, so treat their lists as complementary ways to find films rather than one definitive ranking.

How to read the 2025 best-movies lists
There is no single universal measure of a “best” film. Metacritic aggregates weighted professional reviews; AP’s Lindsey Bahr and Jake Coyle publish their own selections; BFI Sight and Sound presents an international critics’ poll; Time Out ranks films chosen by its film team; and The Guardian publishes distinct US and UK selections. A film’s position therefore reflects each publisher’s contributors, criteria, and release-year scope.
Metacritic’s midyear list covered films that debuted in theaters or directly to VOD or streaming between January 1 and June 30, 2025, required at least seven professional critic reviews, and used scores as of June 30. It ranked 20 qualifying films. That midyear snapshot is not the same as Metacritic’s full-year list, which names its own Movie of the Year. BFI’s annual poll is international and includes 50 films, while the Guardian separates US and UK lists. Those differences matter when a film premiered at a festival in one year but opened commercially in a particular country in another.

The most broadly supported pick: One Battle After Another
For a single starting point, One Battle After Another has unusually strong support across the cited sources. Metacritic named it its 2025 Movie of the Year and displayed a 95 Metascore on its year-end list; AP writers included it prominently; and it was the first-place film in BFI Sight and Sound’s international critics’ poll. These are distinct forms of recognition, not proof that every critic or viewer would choose it.
Metacritic notes that the film draws on Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, a useful companion for readers interested in its literary connection. Metacritic also reported streaming and online rental or purchase options on its page, but availability varies by country and changes over time; check a current local listing before choosing where to watch.

Choose a film by the kind of list you trust
For a critic-score comparison
Metacritic’s full-year list is useful for seeing how a weighted critic-score aggregator orders films. Its year-end ranking should not be confused with its midyear list: the latter explicitly used a January-to-June debut window, a seven-review minimum, and a June 30 score snapshot. Consult the year-end list for its own eligibility and scoring details rather than assuming the midyear rules carry over.
For individual critic choices
The Associated Press presents separate top-film selections from Lindsey Bahr and Jake Coyle. That format makes differences in taste visible instead of blending them into one score. Its page also includes viewing notes, which may help with discovery, though any service or rental destination should be checked for current local availability.

BFI Sight and Sound’s 50-film annual poll draws on international critics. It offers a broader geographic lens than a list tied to a single national release market, but festival and local-release timing can still affect which year a film belongs to.
For mood and genre
Time Out’s film-team ranking includes genre-oriented picks across comedy, horror, action, drama, and family film. A genre recommendation can be more useful than a high overall ranking when you already know what kind of evening you want; use the publication’s category labels to narrow the list before comparing placements.

For overlooked discoveries and regional choices
The Guardian’s separate US and UK selections make release-market differences explicit, and its “you may not have seen” coverage points toward less familiar titles. If a film seems absent from one year’s roundup, check the edition for your territory: its local theatrical release may have taken place in a different calendar year.

Streaming catalogs and digital rental stores change by territory and date, so a static year-end list cannot establish what is available to you now. AP and Metacritic include viewing notes for some films, but treat those as leads rather than guarantees. Check the film’s current listing in your country’s streaming apps or digital storefront before subscribing, renting, or buying.
