There is no single definitive ranking of the best movies of 2022: the year’s most notable films depend on whether you follow an international critics’ poll, a U.S. journalists’ panel, review aggregation or the Oscars. A useful starting shortlist is Aftersun, which topped Sight and Sound’s poll; The Banshees of Inisherin, which led the Associated Press ranking; and Everything Everywhere All at Once, which finished second in the AP poll and won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
How to read the best-movies lists for 2022
Different lists answer different questions. Sight and Sound’s poll reflects the votes of 93 British and international contributors. The Associated Press combined ranked ballots from 26 U.S. film journalists using a Borda count. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide is a ranked selection of Certified Fresh films, while the Oscars record awards chosen by Academy voters. These are distinct signals, not interchangeable measurements of a film’s quality.
The British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound introduction summed up the year this way: “What did the cinema of 2022 bring us? A little bit of everything.” Its poll encompassed work across action, genre, arthouse, documentary, live action and animation, from every continent. The breadth matters: a list led by intimate, formally adventurous work will look different from one shaped by a broad panel or an awards race.
Three standout films and the recognition behind them
| Film | Recognition in 2022-year lists | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Aftersun | First in Sight and Sound’s 2022 poll of 93 contributors. | The poll’s leading choice among its British and international contributors. |
| The Banshees of Inisherin | First in the AP Top 25 Movies ranking, with 392 points. | Led the AP’s combined ranking of 26 U.S. journalists’ ballots. |
| Everything Everywhere All at Once | Second in the AP ranking, with 384 points; winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture for 2022 releases. | It placed eight points behind the AP leader and won the top Academy award at the 95th Oscars, held in 2023. |
| No Bears | First in Rotten Tomatoes’ January 2023 guide to 2022 Certified Fresh films. | It led that guide’s ranked selection, which is not the same kind of result as a voted critics’ poll. |
What the critics’ poll and AP ranking actually measure
Sight and Sound: an international contributors’ poll
The BFI’s “The 50 best films of 2022,” published December 19, 2022, puts Aftersun at number one. The accompanying all-votes page, published the following day, shows 328 nominated choices; that is the number of choices listed, not the number of voters. The BFI describes Aftersun as “Charlotte Wells’s dazzling feature debut shades the joy of an 11-year-old’s resort holiday with her father through the prism of her attempts as an adult to piece together his pain.”

AP: a ranked ballot from 26 U.S. journalists
The AP’s January 19, 2023, Top 25 combined ballots from 26 U.S. journalists who cover film. Each submitted a ranked list of 25 movies, and the ballots produced 176 distinct films. The AP’s Borda-count result gave The Banshees of Inisherin 392 points and Everything Everywhere All at Once 384. The runner-up received the most first-place votes, illustrating why the points-based combined ranking is not simply a count of voters’ top picks.
Why the Oscars winner is a separate kind of “best”
Everything Everywhere All at Once won Best Picture at the 95th Academy Awards on March 12, 2023, which honored films released in 2022. That is a major awards result, but it does not replace a year-end critics’ ranking: the Academy’s award and the BFI and AP lists come from different decision-making processes.

Choosing where to start
- Start with the year’s critics’ poll leader: choose Aftersun if you want the film that topped the 93-contributor Sight and Sound poll.
- Follow the AP panel’s top-ranked film: choose The Banshees of Inisherin for the AP’s number-one pick.
- Watch the Best Picture winner: choose Everything Everywhere All at Once for the Academy’s top 2022-release award, or for the film that finished second in the AP ranking.
- Use the Certified Fresh guide as a different filter: No Bears leads Rotten Tomatoes’ January 2023 list, which applies its own Certified Fresh qualification rather than a contributors’ poll.
