The year’s biggest jokes were often TikTok sounds, in-person chants, copied movements, celebrity captions and deliberately pointless arguments. Some lasted for months; others disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived.
This is an editorial selection of the year’s most memorable meme formats, not an objective ranking. The list also uses “meme” broadly: a catchphrase, a viral edit, a shared debate or a participatory trend all count.
The defining memes and trends of 2025
| Meme or trend | What made it spread |
|---|---|
| 6-7 | A meaningless catchphrase built around a song lyric, basketball edits and a hand gesture |
| Trump take egg | Egg prices became shorthand for political promises and household frustration |
| The Anthropologie rock | A joke about a supposedly $150 rock turned into a brand-aware TikTok bit |
| Duke–White Lotus | A basketball loss was edited into Timothy Ratliff’s escalating crisis |
| “Get me to God’s country” | Morgan Wallen’s caption became a template for escaping to anywhere |
| Le Poisson Steve | A tiny orange fish acquired an outsized French internet persona |
| The conclave memes | The pope-selection process was treated like a celebrity competition |
| Holy airball | A phrase for spectacular misunderstandings and failed attempts |
| 100 men vs. 1 gorilla | An old hypothetical became a huge cross-platform argument |
| The Weapons run | A frightening film movement became an imitation challenge |
| Group 7 | A promotional TikTok experiment accidentally created an online in-group |
| Bobby Hill’s “wabi-sabi” | A cartoon clip reframed personal imperfections as something to embrace |
1. 6-7
Few phrases captured 2025’s deliberately context-free humor better than “6-7.” The expression came from the repeated lyric in Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot (6 7),” which was released in late 2024 and officially arrived in February 2025. Basketball edits helped push the sound across TikTok and Instagram, with LaMelo Ball becoming a frequent visual reference because he is listed at 6 feet 7 inches.
The phrase then escaped the edit. The viral “67 Kid” clip helped turn it into a chant and gesture used by children and teenagers in person. Its appeal was precisely that it had no stable definition. Attempts to decode it missed the point: “6-7” was an in-group signal whose meaning was its lack of meaning.

2. Trump take egg
Eggs became one of the year’s most efficient political punchlines. As prices remained a source of public frustration, jokes about “taking” or dealing with the egg problem played on the gap between Donald Trump’s campaign promises about grocery costs and what shoppers encountered in stores.
This was less a formal slogan than an absurdist shorthand. The egg represented the ordinary household expense that political rhetoric promises to fix, making it easy to use in reaction images, captions and jokes about economic expectations.
3. The Anthropologie rock
TikToker @phoebeadams112 told her boyfriend, as a joke, that she had paid $150 for a rock from Anthropologie. The supposed purchase was so plausible within the retailer’s image that the gag quickly expanded into mock outrage about a store selling extravagantly priced stones.
Anthropologie eventually joined the joke, giving the bit a second life as a brand-aware meme. The important distinction is that the viral $150 rock was a fictional premise, not evidence that Anthropologie was selling that exact object as described.
4. The Duke–White Lotus debacle
Duke’s elimination from the 2025 NCAA men’s basketball tournament collided with the television drama unfolding around Timothy Ratliff in The White Lotus. Jason Isaacs’s character is repeatedly associated with Duke apparel, so viewers treated the team’s tournament collapse as another event in Ratliff’s increasingly frantic personal spiral.
The resulting edits worked because they required almost no explanation. A Duke shirt, an agonized reaction and the show’s mounting sense of catastrophe were enough to turn a sports result into a television character’s latest crisis.
5. “Get me to God’s country”
After Morgan Wallen appeared as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on March 29, he walked off during the closing goodnights. He later posted an image from a private jet on Instagram with the caption “Get me to God’s country.”

That line became a caption template for leaving New York—or any situation at all—for somewhere supposedly more comfortable. Users applied it to homes, restaurants, shops and deliberately unimpressive destinations. The joke came from the melodrama of the rural-versus-city framing, combined with the conspicuous privilege of departing by private jet.

Le Poisson Steve was a small orange fish with an unexpectedly grand presentation. TikTok posts gave Steve French-language framing and narration, treating an ordinary little fish as though he were a major cultural figure.
There was almost no elaborate story to maintain. The gag relied on repetition, tone and the contrast between the fish’s simplicity and the seriousness of the presentation. It was a particularly platform-specific trend, and one of the year’s clearest examples of how quickly TikTok can create a miniature universe and move on.
7. The conclave memes
The 2025 conclave to choose a new pope became online spectacle. Instead of treating the process only as a solemn religious event, users made fancams, pop-music edits and “Brat”-style videos around the smoke, secrecy and speculation.
The humor came from recasting a centuries-old institution as a reality-TV finale or celebrity competition. The contrast between the conclave’s seriousness and the language of stan culture made the event unusually adaptable to meme formats.
8. Holy airball
“Holy airball” describes a spectacular failure: a misunderstanding, a hopeless romantic attempt or a social move that misses so completely it becomes funny. The expression borrows from basketball, where an airball misses the rim, backboard and net altogether.
The trend became prominent in May, often paired with Jeezy’s “Soul Survivor.” Users narrated their own failed interactions and embarrassing misreadings, turning an ordinary mistake into a dramatic sporting collapse. The phrase existed before 2025, but this was the year it became widely recognizable as a TikTok format.

9. 100 men vs. 1 gorilla
The question sounds like a scientific problem but is really an internet thought experiment: could 100 unarmed men defeat one gorilla? Versions of the debate existed before 2025, including a documented TikTok post from 2022. In late April, however, the argument spread across TikTok, X and Reddit at full meme scale.
The best jokes mocked both camps. Some people underestimated what a gorilla could do; others imagined that 100 strangers would instantly become a perfectly coordinated military unit. There is no verified contest or authoritative answer behind the trend—only an argument designed to consume far more attention than it deserves.

10. The Weapons run
A scene in the 2025 horror film Weapons showed children running in a distinctive, unnerving way. The movement was unsettling in the film and strangely easy to reproduce outside it, which made it ideal for short-form video.
Users copied the run, added captions and remixed the original context. Some recreations preserved the horror; others made the movement absurd or relatable. Like many successful video memes, the format had two layers: recognition of the source and the pleasure of performing it badly or unexpectedly.
11. Group 7
Australian singer-songwriter Sophia James promoted her song “So Unfair” in seven separate TikTok videos. Viewers who encountered the seventh video were told they belonged to “Group 7.” The seventh post unexpectedly became the successful one, and viewers began presenting membership as though it were an exclusive club.
James later explained that the grouping was an experiment to see which promotional video the algorithm would favor. That ordinary marketing test became a participatory identity: people did not simply watch the video, they announced which group they were in.

A clip of Bobby Hill from King of the Hill discussing wabi-sabi—the Japanese aesthetic idea commonly associated with beauty in imperfection—became a warm counterpoint to the year’s more chaotic trends.

TikTok users applied the audio to crooked teeth, bad haircuts, awkward features and other imperfections. Instead of apologizing for the flaw, the format presented it affectionately. The joke was both the unexpected philosophical authority of Bobby Hill and the relief of treating imperfection as part of the appeal.

The year’s list shows how broad the category has become. “6-7” was a sound and gesture; “100 men vs. 1 gorilla” was an argument; the Weapons trend was physical imitation; “God’s country” was a caption; and the Anthropologie rock was a brand-participation loop.
Static image macros still exist, but the most visible trends depended on participation. People had to say the phrase, copy the movement, declare their group, make an edit or take a side. That makes 2025’s memes feel less like objects passed around and more like short-lived performances that viewers could join.

FAQ
What was the biggest meme of 2025?
“6-7” was among the year’s most pervasive memes, especially among younger users. Its spread came from TikTok sounds, basketball edits, a viral chant and its intentionally undefined meaning. This is an editorial judgment rather than an official ranking.
What does “6-7” mean?
It has no single agreed-upon meaning. The phrase comes from the repeated lyric in Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot (6 7),” and its lack of a stable definition became part of the joke.
Why did “Get me to God’s country” become a meme?
Morgan Wallen used the caption on an Instagram image from a private jet after his 2025 Saturday Night Live appearance. Users reused it as a dramatic caption for escaping to almost anywhere, often emphasizing the contrast between the grand wording and the ordinary destination.
Are these the definitive best memes of 2025?
No. They are a selected editorial roundup. Other year-end discussions included Italian brainrot, “Nothing Beats a Jet2Holiday,” Labubu jokes, the Coldplay kiss-cam scandal and AI-generated meme formats.
The Bottom Line
The strongest 2025 memes were not necessarily the most polished. They were easy to repeat, easy to adapt and often built around a striking mismatch: a meaningless number, a supposedly expensive rock, a pope-selection process treated like reality television or a horror-film run performed for laughs. Together, they document a year in which internet humor became increasingly participatory, algorithmic and short-lived.
