If your pick for the best MCU movie of all time is Avengers: Endgame, the strongest argument is not that it wins every measure. It is that few Marvel films combine emotional payoff for a long-running saga, a vast ensemble, and extraordinary audience reach as effectively. Whether that makes it the best depends on what you want a great superhero film to do.
Why Avengers: Endgame makes a credible case
Endgame is built to reward viewers who followed the MCU’s Infinity Saga. Its scale matters, but its central appeal is closure: characters and storylines accumulated across earlier films converge in a final confrontation. That gives its climactic moments a weight that a standalone spectacle cannot simply reproduce.
FilmWeek critic Amy Nicholson, in a review reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes and dated September 27, 2019, emphasized the smaller human scale beneath the spectacle: “It is this part of the story, the human side, to narrow it down to our marginal planet, that holds the movie together for its three-hour run time.” Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus calls it “Exciting, entertaining, and emotionally impactful” and says it delivers “a satisfying finale to Marvel’s epic Infinity Saga.”
The movie’s reach is also striking. The Walt Disney Company reported on October 4, 2026, that an Encore re-release helped Endgame surpass Avatar and reclaim the worldwide box-office record. Disney put Endgame at $2.9255 billion and Avatar at $2.9237 billion in that report. Box Office Mojo’s chart, with data as of October 4, 2026, listed Endgame at $2,925,466,085 worldwide, ahead of Avatar at $2,923,710,708. These are dated totals, and the new lead followed a re-release; neither box-office rank proves artistic superiority.

#1 Best Overall
Rotten Tomatoes is one additional measure of reception, not a final verdict. As accessed October 8, 2026, the platform showed a 94% Tomatometer from 552 reviews and a 96% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 verified ratings. Both scores can change. The platform lists the film as PG-13, released in 2019, with a runtime of 3 hours 1 minute.
How to test the “best MCU movie” claim
A fair challenge compares contenders using the same standards. Decide how much you value payoff for longtime viewers versus a story that works for newcomers, then weigh character use, pacing, set pieces, rewatchability, critical and audience reception, and commercial reach. The result may change depending on which of those matters most to you.
- Saga payoff: Does the film make its culmination feel earned by what came before?
- Standalone construction: Can a viewer follow and care about the story without extensive MCU knowledge?
- Ensemble and character arcs: Does the large cast serve the story, and do its key characters have meaningful roles?
- Pacing and set pieces: Do the quieter stretches and action sequences sustain attention across the full runtime?
- Rewatchability and reception: Does it reward repeat viewing, and how do critic and audience responses inform—but not dictate—your judgment?
- Reach: Does commercial success matter to your definition of “best,” or is it separate from artistic quality?
Endgame versus Infinity War—and other contenders
Avengers: Infinity War is the clearest comparison because it is the other large-scale Avengers chapter: its worldwide gross was $2,052,415,039 on Box Office Mojo’s chart as of October 4, 2026. But a higher gross does not settle which film is better. Compare how each handles its ensemble, how effectively it works as a story in its own right, and whether you prefer Infinity War’s unfolding crisis or Endgame’s emphasis on aftermath and resolution.
It is also worth testing the claim against MCU films that do not rely on a large squad. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2022 analysis reported an 89% average Tomatometer for Phase Three’s 11 films. In a separate comparison using scores as of May 3, 2022, titles with at least five heroes teaming up averaged 78%, versus 83.18% for titles without large squads. Those averages do not explain the difference or rank Endgame against every alternative. They do, however, underline why ensemble balance is a meaningful test: sheer cast size can be an asset and a challenge at once.

Where the case is strongest—and where it can fail
Its advantage: accumulated emotional payoff
For viewers invested in the films leading up to it, Endgame can make a familiar character beat, reunion, or sacrifice feel like the payoff to a much longer story. That is a distinctive strength, but it depends on prior investment. A viewer looking for a self-contained introduction to Marvel’s world may find the film less satisfying than someone who arrives with years of context.
Its challenge: scale and pacing
At 3 hours 1 minute, the film asks for a substantial time commitment. Its broad cast and saga-wide responsibilities invite a practical question: do the character moments and turns make that length worthwhile, or does the story feel stretched? A fan’s answer can depend on which characters they value and how much they enjoy ensemble storytelling.
Its evidence: strong reception, not universal agreement
The Rotten Tomatoes scores and box-office record support the case that Endgame reached a large audience and earned strong platform ratings. They cannot establish a universal consensus. Aggregated scores compress many individual responses, and commercial success measures ticket sales rather than a single artistic standard.
So, is it the best MCU movie of all time?
Avengers: Endgame is a defensible pick if your priorities are saga closure, emotional payoff, and a spectacular ensemble culmination. The evidence makes its stature easy to argue: it has high Rotten Tomatoes scores in the October 8, 2026 snapshot and, after a 2026 re-release, a dated worldwide gross that put it back atop Box Office Mojo’s chart. But those facts cannot decide how much you should value a film’s standalone storytelling, pacing, or character focus. The best MCU movie is ultimately the one that succeeds by the criteria you care about most—and Endgame is a formidable contender, not an objective answer.
