HBO Max promoted a Halloween horror collection in October 2025, and dated coverage identified several titles available during parts of the year. But the available sources do not verify a complete list of 20 films across a particular region or the whole of 2025. The selections below are therefore a useful, evidence-backed starting point—not a definitive 20-film ranking or a promise that these movies are still streaming.
What was on HBO Max for horror in 2025?
On October 1, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced an HBO Max Halloween experience called “Face Your Demons.” The announcement named Bring Her Back and The Substance as new streaming titles and described themed collections including “Must-Scream Horror,” “Unleash the Monster,” “Haunted Hall of Fame,” “A Killer Movie Marathon,” and “Stephen King: The King of Fears.” That confirms a seasonal horror curation, but it is not a complete catalog of the service’s films. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement is dated October 1, 2025.

For a viewer choosing a film from dated 2025 coverage, four titles have particularly clear recommendation or arrival evidence. They span folk horror, slashers, vampire horror, and supernatural horror; the best fit depends on the kind of scare you want.
Four horror picks with dated 2025 coverage
| Film | Why it may fit | What the dated source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| The Witch (2015) | Slow-building folk horror set in 1630s New England. | TechRadar reported an October 1, 2025 arrival on HBO Max, a 92-minute runtime, and an R rating. These are the outlet’s reported figures, not a live catalog check. |
| A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) | A slasher built around a killer who stalks victims in their dreams; a classic-era pick for viewers who want a sharper, more fantastical premise. | TechRadar reported an October 1, 2025 arrival, a 91-minute runtime, and an R rating. These details refer to the outlet’s October 2025 report. |
| Sinners (2025) | Period vampire horror: twin brothers, played by Michael B. Jordan, return to Mississippi in 1932 and encounter an immortal vampire. | TheWrap recommended it in an October 11, 2025 guide. TechRadar separately reported a July 4, 2025 arrival on Max. The July arrival date is historical, not a claim of current availability. |
| The Shining (1980) | Supernatural horror and an established classic for viewers drawn to a haunted setting. | TheWrap recommended it in its October 11, 2025 guide and identifies it as an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 novel. |
TechRadar’s October 1 report also gave The Witch a 91% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and A Nightmare on Elm Street a 94% score at publication. Those are the outlet’s dated, mutable figures—not a current rating check. Read the October 2025 TechRadar list. For the two October recommendations, see TheWrap’s October 11, 2025 guide.

How to choose among them
- For folk horror: Choose The Witch for its 1630s New England setting and folk-horror approach.
- For a slasher premise: Choose A Nightmare on Elm Street for dream-stalking terror.
- For period vampire horror: Choose Sinners, whose story is set in Mississippi in 1932.
- For supernatural classic horror: Choose The Shining; readers interested in the source material can look to King’s 1977 novel, which the film adapts.
These are viewing angles, not an objective ranking. The dated recommendations establish that outlets highlighted the titles in 2025; they do not establish a shared consensus about which film is best.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no verified list of exactly 20
The title’s “20 best” framing cannot be supported as a verified, region-specific list from the available dated sources. Those sources confirm a 2025 Halloween collection and several title examples, but not 20 films available across all of 2025 or a defensible ranking of them. Adding 16 more titles without checking them would imply a level of catalog verification the evidence does not provide.
Rank #2
Availability changes by date and region. HBO’s A–Z movie catalog can help with a current discovery check, but a live catalog does not prove what was available historically in 2025. The dated reports also use both “HBO Max” and “Max”; their naming does not remove the need to verify a specific film in the relevant regional service catalog on the date a reader plans to watch.
For additional midyear context, TechRadar reported that Sinners arrived on Max on July 4, 2025, and discussed Get Out, Opus, and Death of a Unicorn in its July slate coverage. Those are dated examples, not confirmation of availability today. See TechRadar’s July 8, 2025 coverage.
