This curated shortlist weighs critical reception, distinctiveness, and variety—from vampire westerns and body horror to anthologies and zombie action—rather than treating one score or list as the final word.
What are the best horror movies of 2025?
These picks are a starting point, not a universal ranking. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide groups films by Tomatometer, while JustWatch publishes an editorial top ten with its own commentary; those approaches can produce different impressions of what “best” means. The selections below balance critical recognition with distinctive ideas and a spread of horror styles.
Sinners — vampire horror with a western and musical edge
Sinners is the strongest first pick for viewers who want horror with ambition beyond scares. It combines vampire horror with music, period atmosphere, and social themes. Rotten Tomatoes places it first among the entries visible in its guide, and JustWatch praises its filmmaking and horror-western elements. That makes it a compelling lead, not proof of a settled consensus.
The Ugly Stepsister — grotesque body horror
This Cinderella reworking is a good choice if you want a familiar fairy tale turned disturbing. Rotten Tomatoes lists it prominently and describes its connection to the Cinderella story; its grotesque, body-horror approach offers a sharp contrast to more conventional supernatural scares.

#1 Best Overall
Good Boy — horror from a canine point of view
Good Boy takes an unusual perspective: its story is experienced through a dog. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus calls it “a visually striking, emotionally devastating horror film” and says it eschews genre conventions for a haunting, ambitious experience. Shudder’s official page features the film, but that does not establish its current availability in every country or plan.
V/H/S/Halloween — an episodic seasonal watch
For a group that prefers short, varied scares over one continuous story, this franchise anthology is the natural fit. JustWatch describes its segments as varied and lists multiple viewing formats on its U.S. page.
Bring Her Back — supernatural and body-horror dread
TechRadar’s 2025 year-in-progress coverage points to Bring Her Back as an example of dread-heavy supernatural and body horror. Its August 2025 viewing details are historical, so use the film as a subgenre recommendation rather than relying on that article for current access.
28 Years Later — zombie action horror
If you want horror with a faster, more action-driven pulse, 28 Years Later is the zombie-horror option in this shortlist. TechRadar included it among its 2025 picks; its August 2025 rental and purchase information should not be read as a live listing.

Black Phone 2 — supernatural franchise horror
Black Phone 2 is another option for viewers seeking supernatural horror. Peacock reported on January 16, 2026, that the film had arrived on its service. That announcement confirms availability at that time, not its current catalog status.
Where can I watch these 2025 horror movies?
Streaming rights are title-, territory-, and date-specific, so a service that carries one film may not carry the next. The U.S. JustWatch list was checked on October 3, 2026, across 373 streaming services. For its ten listed titles, it reports options across HBO Max Amazon Channel, HBO Max, Hulu, Kanopy, and Philo, among other services. Individual film pages may offer streaming, rental, purchase, or physical editions. These are U.S. listings at that date—not a guarantee that every title here is available on those services, or that the same options apply elsewhere.
For a current answer, search the film by exact title on a streaming availability service set to your country, then confirm the option on the provider’s own listing before subscribing or paying. Check whether the result is included with a subscription or is a separate rental or purchase. If you prefer physical media, JustWatch’s U.S. guide includes DVD and Blu-ray purchase options for some titles, including Sinners; confirm the exact edition and seller before ordering.
Other published availability notes are older snapshots: TechRadar’s August 15, 2025 article reported Sinners on HBO Max and described rental or purchase options for several films depending on location; Peacock’s January 16, 2026 article said Black Phone 2 had arrived on Peacock. Neither is confirmation of today’s access. Shudder features Good Boy on its official page, but the page alone does not establish whether it is currently included in a particular plan or available in your region.
