Alternative Christmas movies at a glance
“Alternative” describes a viewing mood, not one genre. A holiday-set action film can be as much an alternative as an international comedy or an art-house family drama. The key distinction is whether Christmas shapes what happens or mainly colors the atmosphere.
| Film | Mood and genre | Christmas connection | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Die Hard (1988) | Action thriller | Strong: the action unfolds during a Christmas Eve party. | Viewers who want a fast, high-energy holiday watch. |
| Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) | Neo-noir black comedy | Mostly backdrop: Christmas decor contrasts with a seedy Los Angeles crime story. | Fans of crime plots and cynical humor. |
| Three Days of the Condor (1975) | Spy thriller | Deliberate holiday backdrop. | Viewers who prefer paranoia and suspense to warmth. |
| Just Another Christmas (2020) | Brazilian time-loop comedy | Central: a Christmas-hating family man is stuck in a loop where it is forever Christmas. | People looking for a high-concept comedy beyond the familiar US holiday setup. |
| It’s a Wonderful Binge (2022) | Irreverent dystopian comedy | Central: the story’s Binge Day falls on Christmas Eve. | Adults in the mood for deliberately unruly holiday satire. |
| Klaus (2019) | Animated origin story | Strong: its story reimagines Santa’s origins in a remote northern village. | Viewers who want a warmer, more accessible counterpoint. |
| A Christmas Tale (2008) | French ensemble family drama | Strong: a family reunion at Christmas is disrupted by a medical crisis. | Viewers ready for a volatile, melancholy art-house drama. |
Action, crime and suspense without the usual holiday warmth
Die Hard: Christmas Eve action
In Die Hard, a Christmas Eve gathering supplies the setting for a tightly wound action thriller. Hulu’s November 24, 2025 holiday guide called it “mostly an action thriller set at a holiday party on Christmas Eve” and revived the familiar question of whether it counts as a Christmas movie. Its holiday connection is more than seasonal decoration, but the appeal is action rather than a sentimental message.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: noir with Christmas lights
For a darker, more comic crime story, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang pairs neo-noir plotting with a holiday-decorated Los Angeles. The Associated Press describes Christmas as an ironic backdrop to the film’s seedy world. It is a good fit when you want seasonal atmosphere without a conventional holiday lesson.

Three Days of the Condor: a cold-weather spy thriller
Sydney Pollack’s Three Days of the Condor takes a more serious route. The Associated Press recommends it as a Christmas thriller and notes that the holiday setting is deliberate. Choose it for political paranoia and suspense rather than jokes or festive comfort.
Comedies that make Christmas the problem
Just Another Christmas: a Brazilian time loop
Netflix describes this Brazilian comedy as the story of a Christmas-hating family man trapped in a time loop in which it is always Christmas. The premise makes the holiday central: the joke and the predicament both depend on being unable to escape it. Netflix’s title page includes Brazilian-language context and lists audio and subtitle options, but the available languages can vary by territory.

It’s a Wonderful Binge: Christmas Eve in a dystopia
Hulu describes It’s a Wonderful Binge as a holiday variation on The Binge, set in a future where drugs and alcohol are prohibited except on Binge Day, which lands on Christmas Eve. That premise signals adult, intentionally irreverent comedy—not a general-purpose family pick.
A warmer animated option
Klaus: a Santa origin story
Sergio Pablos’s animated Klaus follows a desperate postman sent to a remote northern village and reimagines how Santa’s legend begins. The Associated Press describes it as a children’s Christmas movie; it offers a gentler contrast to the crime, suspense and adult comedy elsewhere on this list.

A family reunion with sharper edges
A Christmas Tale: merriment and melancholy
Arnaud Desplechin’s French film A Christmas Tale (Un conte de Noël) brings a troubled family together for Christmas after the matriarch learns she needs a bone marrow transplant. Criterion characterizes it as unpredictable and emotionally volatile, moving between merriment and melancholy. This is a demanding ensemble drama, not a light seasonal comedy.
Criterion lists a director-approved two-DVD special edition; its Blu-ray is marked currently unavailable on the page. That listing establishes the editions Criterion describes, not current stock at other retailers.

How to find these films to watch
Streaming availability depends on your country and changes over time. JustWatch’s guide is US-focused and was updated July 5, 2026; Hulu’s holiday guide is dated November 24, 2025, and Netflix Tudum’s holiday guide was published December 17, 2025. Those are useful starting points, not a live guarantee that a title is included with a subscription on October 8, 2026—or in another territory.
- Search the title in your local streaming service or a current availability guide, confirming the country and date shown.
- Check whether the result is included with a subscription or offered only as a digital rental or purchase; those options are not interchangeable.
- If you want a physical copy of A Christmas Tale, consult Criterion’s edition page and confirm retailer inventory separately.
For a broad genre sampler, Parade’s August 17, 2026 roundup spans thrillers, horror, romance, musicals, comedy, superhero films, children’s fare and action. JustWatch likewise notes that holiday viewing ranges from family films to horror, making mood and audience the practical first filters. The picks here emphasize distinct alternatives rather than claiming to be an exhaustive ranking.
