The best alien-invasion films make the threat feel distinct: some show spacecraft attacking cities, while others turn familiar faces, a neighborhood, or a family home into the front line. This guide selects films for the variety and effectiveness of their invasion stories—not as an objective ranking—using method, scale, suspense, spectacle, tone, and cultural context as its criteria.

What counts as an alien invasion movie?

An alien visit is not automatically an invasion. Here, the term means a hostile extraterrestrial threat to people on Earth, whether it arrives as an overt military attack, a covert occupation or replacement, or a localized assault. That boundary leaves out friendly visitors such as those in E.T. and Arrival. It also makes The Thing an edge case: it is a devastating alien menace, but not a conventional species-led takeover.

There is no definitive consensus on the best alien invasion movies of all time. Space.com presents its selections in no particular order, while the British Film Institute’s list covers alien visitors of different kinds, not only invaders. The films below are grouped by the kind of threat they deliver, so you can choose between spectacle, suspense, satire, and creature horror.

Films built around an open attack

Independence Day (1996): invasion on a global scale

For a full-scale assault and a broad ensemble response, Independence Day is the genre’s big-screen spectacle pick. Its alien ships attack around the globe, and the story follows humanity’s counterattack across a compressed July 2–4 timeline, as described in 20th Century Studios’ official synopsis. The appeal is the scale: a coordinated extraterrestrial force makes the entire planet the battlefield, while human heroics provide the counterweight.

The War of the Worlds (1953): a postwar vision of invasion

This influential Hollywood adaptation of H. G. Wells’s novel turns a Martian attack into a threat against a postwar American setting. The film’s historical moment matters: the BFI places 1950s alien-invasion stories in the context of postwar unease and fears of nuclear conflict. That context enriches the film without reducing its meaning to one allegory.

War of the Worlds (2005): civilian survival in a modern adaptation

Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds is a separate adaptation of Wells’s novel, not a remake of the 1953 film. Its grim, close-to-the-ground approach focuses on civilian survival as an overwhelming attack unfolds. Choose it over Independence Day when you want the invasion to feel frightening and immediate rather than primarily like a spectacle of organized resistance.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014): occupation and repeat attempts

Edge of Tomorrow combines an alien occupation of much of Europe with military conflict and a time-loop structure. The repeated attempts give its action a distinctive engine: each renewed encounter offers another chance to adapt to the enemy. It suits viewers looking for a fast-moving alien invasion film with a high-concept premise rather than a single, steadily unfolding attack.

Invaders who hide among people

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 and 1978): replacement as the threat

Both versions make invasion intimate: the danger is that people you know may no longer be themselves. The 1956 film and 1978 remake belong to different historical moments, and critics have connected the original to broader social unease and the remake to distrust of authority after the Vietnam War. Those are useful readings, not settled explanations of everything either film means. The two versions are worth comparing for how a shared premise changes with its era.

They Live (1988): occupation as social satire

They Live imagines aliens already embedded in human society. Rather than build toward a straightforward arrival-and-battle scenario, it uses covert occupation as the basis for social satire. It is the choice for viewers who want the invasion premise to comment on the world people inhabit, not just on how humanity might fight back.

Small-scale invasions and close-quarters fear

Attack the Block (2011): a neighborhood under siege

In Attack the Block, creatures arrive in meteorites and residents defend their neighborhood. The localized setting and comic-action tone shift attention away from world leaders and military command toward people dealing with danger where they live. It offers a lively alternative to global-disaster stories.

Signs (2002): invasion through family suspense

Signs narrows the threat to a family’s experience. Its strength is suspense and family drama rather than continuous combat or large-scale destruction. Pick it when you want an alien invasion story that keeps fear close to home.

When the invasion is played for laughs—or becomes creature horror

Mars Attacks! (1996): gleeful destruction as satire

Where Independence Day treats an alien attack as earnest blockbuster spectacle, Mars Attacks! turns destruction into comedy and satire. That tonal contrast makes it a useful counterpoint: the invasion remains hostile, but the pleasure comes from the film’s irreverent treatment of it.

The Thing (1982): an excellent alien menace, with a caveat

The Thing centers on a shape-shifting alien predator among an Antarctic research crew. The BFI emphasizes its isolation, uncertainty, and creature horror, all of which make it a standout film about an extraterrestrial threat. But under a narrow definition of invasion as a species mounting a takeover, it is a debatable fit: the danger is a deadly organism that landed long ago, not a conventional attack force. Include it if your list is about alien menaces broadly; leave it out if you want only invasion campaigns.

How to choose your next alien invasion film

  • For global spectacle: Start with Independence Day or the 1953 The War of the Worlds.
  • For civilian peril: Choose Spielberg’s 2005 War of the Worlds.
  • For covert replacement or occupation: Try either Invasion of the Body Snatchers or They Live.
  • For local danger: Choose Attack the Block for comic action or Signs for family suspense.
  • For an unusual action structure: Try Edge of Tomorrow.
  • For satire or creature horror: Choose Mars Attacks! or, with the invasion-boundary caveat, The Thing.

Why alien invasions keep changing with their era

Alien-invasion films can give contemporary anxieties an extraterrestrial form, but their meanings are not fixed. The BFI notes postwar and nuclear fears as context for 1950s invasion stories, and connects the two Invasion of the Body Snatchers eras to different kinds of social unease. History.com’s account of UFOs and alien invasions in film traces the hostile-invader motif from 1950s films through Independence Day and Spielberg’s 2005 War of the Worlds. Read those contexts as ways into the films, not as one definitive key to them.

For the source behind both War of the Worlds adaptations, H. G. Wells’s novel offers a useful companion read; the BFI identifies the 1953 film as an adaptation of the book.
