The Bad Guys 2 narrowly beat Pixar’s Elio at the North American box office on opening weekend, taking in about $22 million versus about $21 million. The comparison is striking because The Bad Guys 2 had a reported $80 million production budget, while estimates for Elio ranged from $150 million to as high as $200 million. That makes Elio an underperformer by Pixar’s usual opening-weekend standard—not a film whose precise financial loss can be established from these figures.
Which Pixar movie did The Bad Guys 2 beat?
The comparison is with Elio, Pixar’s original animated film. Both films opened in North America in 2025, and The Bad Guys 2 posted the higher domestic opening weekend. The figures below use The Numbers’ listed totals; Associated Press reports from the weekends rounded them to about $22 million and $21 million, respectively.
| Film | Domestic opening weekend | Reported production budget |
|---|---|---|
| The Bad Guys 2 | $21,995,715, according to The Numbers’ 2026 listing | $80 million, according to The Numbers’ 2026 listing |
| Elio | $20,840,667, according to The Numbers’ 2026 listing | $150 million, according to The Numbers’ 2026 listing |
The difference in opening grosses is $1,155,048—about $1.16 million. That is a modest edge, not a blowout. The Associated Press described The Bad Guys 2’s opening as roughly $22 million from 3,852 North American theaters and Elio’s as roughly $21 million.
Was Elio really a $200 million movie?
Not as a confirmed figure. The Numbers lists Elio’s production budget at $150 million, and the Associated Press reported that Disney and Pixar spent at least that much making the film. The Los Angeles Times described the reported estimate as between $150 million and $200 million. The upper end should therefore be presented as a reported estimate, not a settled budget: Los Angeles Times, 2025.

The $80 million figure for The Bad Guys 2 is also a reported production budget, listed by The Numbers. Comparing these estimates helps explain why the two openings carried different stakes, but it does not by itself measure either film’s profitability.
Why was Elio called a box-office bomb?
“Bomb” is shorthand for an opening that fell short of expectations relative to a film’s cost and the studio’s track record. The Associated Press called Elio Pixar’s lowest opening at the time. Movie consultant David A. Gross told AP: “These would be solid numbers for another original animation film, but this is Pixar, and by Pixar’s remarkable standard, the opening is well below average.”

That describes a disappointing launch, not a proven net loss. The available opening and budget figures do not include all relevant costs, such as marketing, or the share of ticket sales retained by theaters. They also do not account for later theatrical play or revenue from other distribution windows. A box-office gross is not the same as money returned to a studio, so these figures cannot establish an exact loss.
