Later, reflecting on the breakup, she said she was “so mad that I got it wrong”—meaning she had misjudged her own read of the connection, not that she regretted ending it.
Why was Sam McKinney a frontrunner?
Sam, a 27-year-old contractor from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, received Jenn’s First Impression Rose, making him an early standout on her season of The Bachelorette. That rose signaled an initial spark, but it did not guarantee the relationship would deepen.

What happened between Jenn and Sam?
The group date raised questions
During a radio-show group date, Sam answered “aggressive” when prompted with “Fantasy Suite” in a rapid-fire word-association round. Guest stars Jason and Molly Mesnick encouraged Jenn to spend more time getting to know him. Jenn agreed that his answers had left her confused.

Jenn asked what Sam had learned about her
In their one-on-one conversation, Jenn asked Sam about his first impression of her and how it had changed. ET reported that he spoke instead about his own experience on the show. He said Jenn was not his type and that he had expected Daisy Kent or Maria Georgas to be the Bachelorette.
Sam spoke about Jenn’s appearance and selflessness, then emphasized their physical connection. When Jenn asked how he knew her, he said physical touch was his love language and kissed her in front of the group. Jenn later told him, “You’re saying all the right things, and it’s just hard for me to believe you.”
Sam said “I love you”
That evening, after Jenn pressed him about the date, Sam answered, “Because I love you.” Jenn challenged the declaration because, as she saw it, he could not back it up with an explanation that felt meaningful to her.
“I’m feeling frustrated and confused. Where the hell is this coming from? To not be able to back up such a bold proclamation, I don’t feel like it’s real to me,” she said, adding that there was “no substance” and “no logic” behind it.

Before the rose ceremony, Jenn pulled Sam aside and ended the relationship. She said he was not listening or asking questions and that she could not see the love he claimed to feel. In a confessional, she said, “He’s dismissing me. He’s not listening. He’s not asking. I’m not seeing the love… I could literally be anybody right now and it wouldn’t matter.”
Jenn connected that dynamic to a past relationship in which she felt she had to teach someone how to prioritize her. Her stated reason for ending things was the gap between Sam’s declaration and what she felt he had shown about knowing and valuing her specifically.

In an on-camera interview after the episode, as quoted by ET, Jenn said: “I don’t know exactly what love is, but I know that is not what love is. I really pride myself on reading people well and being intuitive, and I am so mad that I got it wrong… I understand my worth and what I deserve and what I want, and what I want is not Sam.”
“Got it wrong” referred to Jenn’s belief that her instincts about Sam and their connection had misled her. The comment came alongside a clear statement that she knew what she wanted and did not want to continue the relationship.

How did Sam react to the breakup?
Sam’s account in his confessional differed from Jenn’s. He said he had not expected to go home and described Jenn’s energy as dull. That was his reaction to the breakup, not an objective description of Jenn or proof of either person’s private intentions. The episode’s recap presents two contrasting perspectives: Jenn felt unheard and unconvinced, while Sam did not think it was his time to leave.
