The Avatar Game Is So Good, They Don’t Need to Make the Movies Anymore

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora may be the more immersive Avatar experience for players who want to roam Pandora, but its appeal is exploration and agency, not a universally better story.

Boone Ashworth’s provocative argument is that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora can deliver a more absorbing Avatar experience than the films—not because it tells a better story, but because it lets players spend far longer inside Pandora. The distinction matters: the movies focus on characters and relationships, while the game’s greatest strength is giving players room to explore the world themselves.

What the claim means—and what it doesn’t

In his December 19, 2025 WIRED article, Ashworth makes an aesthetic argument, not a measured verdict or consensus ranking. He praises the game’s lush environment and the freedom to roam, hunt and fight, while also describing its plot as dense, its characters as forgettable, and its scope as potentially bloated. The game may be the better choice for someone who wants to inhabit Pandora; that does not make it a better-framed story than the films.

That difference is the heart of the comparison. A film guides viewers through a chosen sequence of scenes. Frontiers of Pandora gives players a custom Na’vi protagonist and a setting they can explore at their own pace. The payoff is agency and time in the world, not an established advantage in storytelling, character writing or objective visual quality.

Why playing in Pandora can feel different

Exploration is the attraction

The game takes place in Pandora’s Western Frontier. Its appeal, as Ashworth describes it, is the ability to linger: travel through glowing forests, look closely at the flora, and decide where to go next rather than seeing only the locations selected for a film’s narrative. For fans whose favorite part of Avatar is its alien environment, that open-ended access can be more satisfying than another fixed runtime.

Avatar: Fire and Ash - 4K + Blu-ray + Digital
  • Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.

Actions connect the world to its conflict

The experience also includes combat against RDA forces and the restoration of damaged environments, with foliage returning after players clear encampments. That loop ties exploration and action to the franchise’s ecological conflict. It is still a game, not a documentary account of environmental restoration, and the article’s praise is a report of one writer’s experience rather than a controlled comparison.

A player character creates a personal route through the setting

The protagonist is a custom Na’vi, so the player’s route through the world is not simply the film’s route replayed. Lead game designer Amandine Lauer describes the intention this way: “We try to make sure that everyone gets to tell their own story,” she told WIRED. That means choosing how to move through the setting and spend time there; it does not mean the game has no authored plot.

Game versus films: which experience fits you?

What matters to you Avatar films Frontiers of Pandora
Narrative Directed stories centered on characters and relationships, as Ashworth characterizes them. A game story featuring a custom Na’vi protagonist; Ashworth finds its plot dense and its characters less memorable.
Control You watch the action and follow the film’s selected scenes. You choose where and how to explore, hunt and fight.
Time in Pandora A finite film runtime. Extended exploration at the player’s pace.
Pacing A fixed sequence shaped by the filmmakers. Room to roam, which can be a pleasure for explorers and feel overlong to players who want a tighter story.
Best fit Viewers looking for an authored story about people and relationships. Players who primarily want to inhabit Pandora and set their own pace.

This is a qualitative comparison, not a test with a single objective winner. Ashworth’s point is strongest for readers who value immersion and control more than narrative tightness.

Ubisoft’s free update released December 5, 2025 added third-person mode and New Game+. Players can switch between first- and third-person perspectives. This lets players choose how they view the world, but does not change the basic distinction between the films’ authored narratives and the game’s player-led exploration. Ubisoft’s announcement and update information describe the features.

Ubisoft announced on February 17, 2026 that the game became available with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Subscription catalogs and regional availability can change; check the current catalog in your region before relying on access through a subscription. Ubisoft’s Game Pass announcement gives the announcement details.

How to approach editions and From the Ashes

From the Ashes is an expansion, not another name for the base game. Ubisoft describes it as a separate purchase or content included in certain editions alongside the base game. It follows So’lek and connects to Avatar: Fire and Ash. Before purchasing, confirm whether the listing includes the base game, whether the expansion requires it, and that the edition matches your platform. Ubisoft’s official product page lists editions; contents and availability may vary by region.

Why the game suits Avatar’s world

The game’s appeal also has a community dimension. WIRED reported that Kelutral, a fan organization, had around 12,300 members in its December 2025 article; this is an approximate figure from that report, not a current membership count. Seth Wright, known as Mako and identified there as the organization’s director of operations, said: “Avatar as a franchise is really well suited to interactive experiences,” Mako told WIRED.

Massive Entertainment senior narrative coordinator and “lore keeper” Jennifer Bartram expressed the franchise’s world-building ambition in the same article: “They call this series not science fiction, but science fact,” Bartram said. The remark helps explain why a world that rewards close attention and exploration can be central to the appeal, even for players who find the game’s plot less compelling than the films’ stories.

Is the game a replacement for the movies?

Only if what you want from Avatar is primarily access to Pandora. The game gives players a custom Na’vi, freedom to explore, and more time with the environment than a fixed film narrative can offer. If you come for a tightly shaped story about family and love, Ashworth’s own reservations about the game’s plot and characters point the other way. The title’s claim is best read as a celebration of a different kind of immersion—not proof that the films are unnecessary.
