The Avatar Cycle is the succession of Avatars through reincarnation, with each new Avatar born into a different nation and able to master all four elements. Avatar Studios gives the cycle’s order as water → earth → fire → air, then back to water. That is the cycle order—not the order Aang learns the elements.
What is the Avatar Cycle?
In the world of Avatar, the Avatar is a single person who is reincarnated across generations. Each incarnation belongs to one of the four nations and has the capacity to master water, earth, fire, and air. The Avatar’s role is to help restore balance, as Nickelodeon’s Avatar fan page describes.
The cycle refers to the succession from one Avatar to the next. It is distinct from the order in which an individual Avatar learns bending. Aang, for example, learns elements during his own lifetime; that learning sequence does not define the order of reincarnation.
What is the Avatar Cycle order?
Avatar Studios’ official timeline states that the Avatars upheld “the cycle of water, earth, fire and air.” The sequence is therefore:

After air, the cycle returns to water. Avatar Studios is the clearest source for the canon order on its official timeline.
Why do some explanations give a different order?
Some secondary explanations describe the cycle as fire, air, water, earth, tying it to the order in which Avatar Wan mastered the elements. That is not the order Avatar Studios gives for the cycle itself. When an explanation appears to start with a different element, check whether it is discussing Wan’s mastery, a particular Avatar’s learning, or the reincarnation cycle. Those are related but separate ideas.

The question “Why does the Avatar Cycle go Fire, Wind, Water and Earth?” contains a premise that does not match Avatar Studios’ stated cycle. The official wording uses air, and gives the order as water, earth, fire, air.
Who was the first Avatar?
Avatar Studios identifies Wan as the first Avatar. His origin is told in “Beginnings, Pt. 1: Wan’s Story” and “Beginnings, Pt. 2: Wan’s Story,” season two episodes seven and eight of The Legend of Korra. Those episodes are the on-screen starting point for the cycle’s origin.

This is a statement about the fictional chronology; it does not give an exact total number of Avatars across all eras.
How does the cycle connect the Avatar eras?
Avatar Studios’ timeline groups later history around named Avatars including Yangchen, Kuruk, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang, and Korra. Each belongs to a different period in the succession. The timeline’s “more than 90” figure applies specifically to the span between Wan and Yangchen, not to the entire history of the cycle.

The story of Wan and the spirit Raava is central to the origin episodes. For the precise events and how the bond is presented, the episodes themselves are the best source; broader mechanics should not be inferred from a brief timeline description alone.

The Legend of Korra depicts a major disruption involving the Avatar’s connection to previous lives. Avatar Studios’ timeline identifies Korra’s era but does not explain the full mechanics or scope of that change. The episodes establish the story event; claims about exactly how the past-life connection works afterward should be tied to what those episodes show rather than treated as a general rule based only on the timeline.
