The Apprentice is Ali Abbasi’s 2024 dramatic feature about Donald Trump’s early New York business career and his relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn. It is not a documentary or the later reality TV series of the same name, and its focus is a specific relationship—not a complete account of Trump’s life.
What is The Apprentice about?
The film follows a young Trump’s rise in New York, centering on his relationship with Roy Cohn, the lawyer and political fixer portrayed as an influential mentor. The Festival de Cannes’ official synopsis describes the story as charting Trump’s ascent through a “Faustian deal” with Cohn. The Associated Press characterizes it as a drama inspired by true events and focused on the 1980s.
That framing makes the Trump–Cohn relationship the film’s organizing story, rather than a chronological account of Trump’s entire life or political career. The film’s stated focus is on the formative business years and the influence of Cohn.
Who made the film, and who is in the cast?
Ali Abbasi directed The Apprentice, and Gabriel Sherman wrote it. The Festival de Cannes lists the film as a 120-minute feature produced by Canada, Denmark, and Ireland, and records it as an in-competition selection in 2024.

Cohn was a lawyer and political fixer who mentored Trump. The AP also notes Cohn’s earlier role as chief counsel to Joseph McCarthy’s Senate investigations in the 1950s.
Is The Apprentice a biopic?
Not in the full-life sense. Abbasi told the AP, “This is not a biopic of Donald Trump,” explaining that he wanted to tell a specific story through Trump’s relationship with Cohn, rather than cover every stage of Trump’s life from “A to Z.” The film’s limited scope is important: it is a dramatized account of selected years and events, not a comprehensive biography.

Abbasi has also described the project as being about a system and how power moves through it. That is the director’s artistic framing of the story, not a claim that the film documents or settles every aspect of how political or business power works.
Is the film based on a true story, and how accurate is it?
The film draws on real people and events, but it is a dramatic feature. In a September 2024 interview with TheWrap, Abbasi said the movie was “very much fact-based and fact-checked” and referred to “rigorous journalistic work” behind it. Those are the director’s descriptions of the film’s research approach; they do not independently verify every scene or establish that each dramatic detail happened as shown.

It is therefore most accurate to treat the film as a dramatization with a defined historical focus, rather than as a documentary or a definitive record. A scene’s presence in the film is not, by itself, proof that the event occurred exactly as depicted.
What is the context for the Ivana Trump scene?
The AP reports that the film depicts an alleged rape of Ivana Trump. The underlying account is disputed and needs its full context: in a 1990 divorce deposition, Ivana used that characterization; Donald Trump denied the allegation; Ivana later said she had not meant the word literally and meant that she had felt violated. The film’s dramatized scene should not be presented as a finding of fact or as resolving that dispute.

TheWrap reported in September 2024 that a U.S. release was planned for October 11, 2024. Those dates establish the festival premiere and the reported U.S. release plan, not present-day access.
