Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, it stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Cohn.
This is not a documentary and it is not an installment of the American or BBC reality-television series also called The Apprentice. The film uses real people and historical circumstances, but presents them through a deliberately shaped dramatic interpretation of Trump’s early career, ambition, relationships, and methods.

What is The Apprentice about?
The film follows a young Donald Trump as he tries to establish himself in New York’s competitive real-estate world. Rather than concentrating on Trump’s presidency or later political career, the story looks backward at the period when he was building a public identity, seeking powerful allies, and learning how to turn attention into influence.

The central relationship is between Trump and Roy Cohn, the New York attorney known for his political connections, aggressive courtroom and media tactics, and controversial public career. Cohn becomes a mentor and protector of sorts, while Trump appears as an ambitious protégé looking for access, legitimacy, and a strategy for overcoming resistance.
That relationship supplies the film’s dramatic engine. Trump wants to become more than the son of a successful New York developer, while Cohn recognizes an eager, malleable figure who may be useful to him. Their association is presented as a formative exchange: Trump gains lessons in confrontation and publicity, and Cohn gains a protégé whose ambition can serve his own interests.
What does the title mean?
The title has two connected meanings.
Within the film’s story, Trump is Cohn’s apprentice: a younger man learning a style of power built around attacking opponents, refusing to concede weakness, and treating victory as the principal measure of success. The film’s interpretation is that this relationship helped shape the combative public persona later associated with Trump.
The title also recalls the American reality-television program The Apprentice, which premiered in 2004 and made Trump a national television celebrity. In that series, contestants competed for a job or business opportunity associated with Trump, and the franchise later expanded into Celebrity Apprentice. The 2024 film uses the familiar title to connect Trump’s later television image with the earlier apprenticeship portrayed in the movie.

The film is not about contestants competing in a boardroom, and its story does not take place during the reality show’s production.
Is The Apprentice a documentary?
No. The Apprentice is a dramatized biographical feature, not a documentary, archival investigation, or exhaustive historical record.

Its characters are based on real people, and its setting draws on Trump’s early career in New York real estate. However, scenes have been selected, compressed, staged, and interpreted for dramatic purposes. The film should therefore be understood as an argument about how Trump’s public identity was formed, not as a neutral chronology in which every conversation or incident is independently established fact.
This distinction matters particularly because the movie addresses alleged abuse, sexual assault, drug use, and morally disputed aspects of Trump’s personal and professional life. What the film depicts onscreen is the filmmakers’ representation of events; it should not automatically be treated as documentary proof. Viewers seeking a factual account should compare the film with independent reporting and historical sources rather than relying on it alone.

The film’s politically sensitive portrayal also attracted controversy before its United States release. Reporting by the Associated Press described legal threats from Trump’s campaign during that period. Those threats are part of the film’s release history, not evidence that every disputed scene is historically verified.
Cast and performances
| Actor | Role | Why the role matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sebastian Stan | Donald Trump | Plays Trump during the early phase of his real-estate career, before the television persona and political identity that became more widely known. |
| Jeremy Strong | Roy Cohn | Portrays the attorney as the film’s principal mentor figure and the source of its theory about Trump’s formative education in power and publicity. |
| Maria Bakalova | Ivana Trump | Plays Ivana Trump during the period covered by the film. |
| Martin Donovan | Fred Trump Sr. | Plays Trump’s father, whose established real-estate business forms an important part of the younger Trump’s starting position. |
The performances are among the film’s main critical talking points. Stan’s performance focuses on Trump’s transformation into a more polished and confrontational public figure, while Strong’s Cohn is the film’s volatile counterforce and ideological instructor. Bakalova and Donovan help place Trump’s ambitions within his family and personal life rather than treating his rise as a story produced by Cohn alone.
How historically accurate is the film?
The most useful way to approach the film’s accuracy is to separate its broad historical framework from its dramatic interpretation.
- Historical framework: The movie is set during Trump’s early New York real-estate career and centers on his real relationship with Roy Cohn. Those are the basic circumstances on which the story is built.
- Interpretive thesis: The film argues that Cohn significantly influenced Trump’s methods of dealing with opponents, journalists, institutions, and public failure.
- Dramatic construction: Individual conversations, transitions, timing, and private encounters may be rearranged or recreated to create a coherent narrative.
- Limits of the film: It does not attempt to document every business deal, political connection, family event, or social context from the period.
In other words, the film is best read as a stylized interpretation of a formative relationship. It asks viewers to consider how a particular model of influence and self-presentation could shape a public figure. It should not be marketed or watched as a definitive biography.

Style, tone, and central idea
Abbasi’s film is less interested in presenting a complete résumé than in dramatizing a process of transformation. Its New York setting and period presentation establish the world in which Trump is trying to move from inherited real-estate status to independent celebrity and influence.
The Cohn-Trump relationship gives that transformation a clear structure. Cohn represents a hard-edged method: attack first, deny vulnerability, and treat a public fight as an opportunity to control the conversation. Trump is shown absorbing and adapting those lessons. The movie’s central question is not simply whether Cohn helped Trump professionally, but what kind of public behavior Trump learned to regard as effective.
That focus is also the film’s major limitation for some viewers. By placing so much explanatory weight on one relationship, it can make a complicated career appear more direct and streamlined than real history usually is. The approach creates a strong dramatic through-line, but it is not intended to replace a broader account of the political, economic, familial, and media forces surrounding Trump’s rise.
Release history and where to watch
The Apprentice was selected for the 2024 Cannes competition and had its Cannes presentation in May 2024. It opened theatrically in the United States on October 11, 2024, through Briarcliff Entertainment/Rich Spirit.
Rotten Tomatoes lists November 1, 2024, as a streaming release date and gives the film an approximately two-hour-and-two-minute runtime. A release date on an aggregator does not necessarily mean that the film remains included with a subscription service, so viewers should distinguish between subscription streaming and a rental or purchase transaction.
The United States availability check supplied for this article was dated July 7, 2026. At that time, JustWatch listed the film for digital rental or purchase through Amazon Video and other major transactional video stores. It also listed DVD and Blu-ray purchase options, including listings associated with Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Digital rights, prices, sellers, and subscription availability can change, so those options should be rechecked before publication or purchase.

For viewers who prefer a physical copy, a correctly identified The Apprentice 2024 DVD is the clearest format-specific search. Check that any listing identifies the 2024 Ali Abbasi film and not the American reality series, a different international adaptation, or an unrelated title. Blu-ray availability has also been reported, but the exact edition, seller, and eligibility should be confirmed on the listing before it is presented as a recommended purchase.
Reception and awards context
The film received substantial attention at Cannes because of its performances, its political subject, and the sensitivity of dramatizing a living public figure. Cannes later noted two Golden Globe nominations connected with the film.

Critical discussion has generally concentrated on four areas: Stan’s performance as Trump, Strong’s performance as Cohn, the movie’s stylized period presentation, and the question of whether its central interpretation makes Trump’s transformation clearer or oversimplifies it. That last issue is especially important. The film’s strength is its focused explanation of one influence; its risk is making that explanation feel more complete than it is.

| Title | What it is | Central figure | Key period |

| The Apprentice (2024) | Dramatized biographical feature film | Young Donald Trump and Roy Cohn | 1970s and 1980s New York |
| The Apprentice (United States) | Reality-television business competition | Donald Trump | Premiered in 2004; American run continued through 2017, with later Celebrity Apprentice branding |
| The Apprentice (BBC) | British reality-competition series | Lord Alan Sugar | Began in 2005 |
The BBC program is also associated with the companion show You’re Fired!. Facts about contestants, eliminations, boardroom catchphrases, or that companion program belong to the television franchise, not to Abbasi’s 2024 film.
Who should watch it?
The film is most useful for viewers interested in a focused, performance-led interpretation of Trump’s early public formation, Roy Cohn’s influence, and the relationship between real-estate ambition, media image, and power. It can serve as a starting point for further research, especially if watched alongside independent historical reporting.
It is less suitable for anyone looking for a neutral documentary, a comprehensive biography, or a complete history of Trump’s business career. The R rating and the film’s treatment of sexual assault, sexual content, drug use, language, and graphic nudity also make it inappropriate for younger viewers and potentially difficult viewing for some adults.

Its subject matter is controversial, but controversy alone does not settle whether the film succeeds. The more useful question is whether its dramatic thesis—that Cohn helped teach Trump a durable style of public combat—illuminates the period without pretending to explain everything about the person who came afterward.
