Spoilers for the ending of The American. Jack is shot in his final confrontation with Pavel, reaches the river where Clara is waiting, and collapses. The film never confirms whether he dies or survives.
What happens at the end of The American?
- Jack modifies the rifle he built for Mathilde. During a religious procession, he tells Clara he wants them to leave together.
- Mathilde tries to shoot Jack from a rooftop, but the altered rifle backfires. As she is dying, she reveals her connection to Pavel.
- Pavel arrives and exchanges gunfire with Jack. Jack kills him, but is wounded in the fight and seems not to realize it at first.
- Jack drives to the river rendezvous, where Clara is waiting. He reaches her and collapses; the film ends without showing what happens next.
Does Jack die in The American?
The movie does not establish that Jack dies. It shows him wounded and collapsing after he reaches Clara, but offers no confirmation of his death or recovery. A viewer may infer that the wound is fatal, yet that remains an inference rather than an event the film depicts.

What does the ending mean?
Director Anton Corbijn described the film’s theme as “a loner trying to find redemption from the deeds he’s done.” He also asked whether someone can “make good after doing wrong” and overcome traits that define them. These are Corbijn’s thematic questions, not an answer about Jack’s medical fate. Focus Features’ production notes, dated July 14, 2010, provide his comments.
Within that frame, Jack’s proposal to leave with Clara is a concrete attempt to choose a life beyond isolation and violence. His collapse leaves the possibility of that change unresolved: the film gives him a moment of reaching for another future, but not proof that he gets to live it.

How the film’s context shapes the ending
The American is a thriller and drama directed by Anton Corbijn, with George Clooney as Jack, Violante Placido as Clara, Thekla Reuten as Mathilde, and Paolo Bonacelli as Father Benedetto. Focus Features lists its release date as September 1, 2010, and its runtime as 1 hour 45 minutes. Its official synopsis describes Jack retreating to the Italian countryside after a job ends violently, then taking one last assignment to build a weapon. See the Focus Features film page for the film’s listed credits and synopsis.
The film is adapted from Martin Booth’s novel A Very Private Gentleman, but the novel and film have different endings. The book is useful context for adaptation comparisons; it does not resolve the film’s deliberately unanswered final scene.
