During a season 17 The Amazing Race Roadblock, a watermelon launched from a giant slingshot struck contestant Claire Champlin in the face. CBS reported at the time that she was OK and had no bruise, though she had a headache. The mishap appeared in a preview ahead of the season premiere on September 26, 2010.
What happened in the watermelon slingshot clip?
Claire and her teammate Brook, whom CBS described as Home Shopping Television hosts, were attempting a Roadblock that called for contestants to launch a small watermelon from a giant slingshot at a suit of armor. The target was set about 50 feet away, according to CBS Texas’s September 10, 2010 report.
In the preview clip covered by CBS News on September 9, 2010, the watermelon hit Claire in the center of her face. The reports establish that she was struck; they do not explain exactly how the launch went wrong or give a measured speed or impact force.
What was Claire Champlin’s condition afterward?
CBS News reported that Claire was OK and, surprisingly, bruise-free, but had a headache. That is the extent of the immediate health information in the report: it does not provide a clinical assessment, an exact diagnosis, or a long-term update.

What did Brook say after the impact?
CBS News attributed this response to Brook: “You have to finish.” It is the line the report quoted after Claire was hit; it should be understood as a CBS-attributed quote, not as a transcript independently verified against the full episode.
When did the challenge air?
CBS introduced the clip as a season 17 preview. The season’s opening episode, “They Don’t Call It The Amazing Race For Nothin!,” is dated September 26, 2010 in the season and episode guide, placing the challenge in the race’s opening leg.
