Robert De Niro’s double casting is the main event in The Alto Knights: he plays rival New York crime bosses Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, once friends and now locked in a struggle for power. The conceit gives the film an immediate point of interest, but it does not make the surrounding mob story feel new. The result is a mixed crime drama whose strongest moments come from watching De Niro face himself.
What is The Alto Knights about?
Directed by Barry Levinson and written by Nicholas Pileggi, the 2025 crime drama centers on Costello and Genovese’s rivalry. The studio’s premise frames it as a relationship undone by jealousy, betrayal and the contest for control of New York’s underworld. The film’s defining formal hook is that De Niro portrays both men.

That setup makes the story less a conventional clash between two stars than a test of whether one actor can make a face-to-face rivalry feel like a genuine conflict between distinct people. The dual role is an effective reason to watch, though it cannot by itself supply the emotional and historical depth the screenplay needs.
Does De Niro make the dual role work?
De Niro gives the two sides enough presence for their confrontations to hold attention. The appeal is not simply the novelty of seeing the same actor on both sides of a scene: the performances give the rivalry a center, and the face-to-face exchanges are where the film most clearly comes alive. Variety critic Peter Debruge praised those scenes, writing, “If there was any doubt about De Niro’s greatness, it’s laid to rest in these face-to-face confrontations. No star could’ve held his own quite so effectively against De Niro.”

Still, the casting device can feel more striking than the characters’ development. The film does not consistently turn the contrast between Costello and Genovese into a deeper portrait of friendship curdling into rivalry. De Niro’s work is the strongest argument for seeing the movie, but the screenplay does not always give it enough to build on.
Why did critics disagree about the film?
The divide is largely between appreciation for De Niro’s performance and disappointment that the overall drama does not match it. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls the movie “A competent but tired retread of mob movie tropes,” while Metacritic reproduces New York Magazine critic Bilge Ebiri’s verdict: “It feels like the husk of something that might have been great once.” Those reactions point to the same tension: the film has a compelling central idea, but familiar genre material and limited dramatic development blunt its impact.

At the time the cited aggregator pages were checked in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 39% Tomatometer score from 143 critic reviews and a 71% verified audience score from more than 500 ratings. Metacritic listed a 47 Metascore from 41 critic reviews. These are changing snapshots, not fixed measures of quality; they indicate a generally cool critical response alongside a less negative audience score, rather than a consensus that everyone will share.
Is The Alto Knights worth watching?
Watch it if De Niro’s two-sided performance is enough to carry a familiar mob story for you, or if you are interested in seeing Levinson and Pileggi revisit the genre through the Costello–Genovese rivalry. Skip it if you want a crime drama that substantially reinvents its conventions or develops the pair’s relationship with more depth. The performance offers a real point of interest, but the film around it is more conventional than its premise suggests.
