The Agency Season 1, Episode 3 Review: “Hawk from a Handsaw” Is a Slow-Burn Spy Drama

“Hawk from a Handsaw,” season 1, episode 3 of The Agency, trades conventional spy-thriller momentum for subdued conversations and character complications. In CBR’s review, Martin Carr argues that the episode offers little immediate payoff and too little character development to make its slow pace compelling. That is one critic’s judgment, but it captures the installment’s central risk: viewers looking for sharp espionage tension may find it remote.

What happens in episode 3?

The episode follows several unsettled threads rather than building toward a single major spy set piece. Carr’s review describes Coyote as “off the reservation,” while Martian faces parenting problems and complications involving his elusive girlfriend. The review offers those strands as the episode’s main points of interest, not as a detailed account of every plot turn.

In the show’s organizational setup, Martian and Henry report to Bosko, the London station chief. The review identifies the characters with Michael Fassbender as Martian, Jeffrey Wright as Henry and Richard Gere as Bosko.

Is “Hawk from a Handsaw” worth watching?

It depends on what you want from an espionage drama. If you enjoy restrained character scenes and are willing to wait for tension to accumulate, the episode’s quieter approach may suit you. If you expect brisk plotting, clear dramatic escalation or a substantial payoff within the hour, Carr’s review suggests this installment may disappoint.

His criticism is that stilted conversations and limited character development keep the drama at a distance. He writes, “It goes against the grain of espionage thrillers by giving viewers almost nothing to work with.” He also describes the episode’s emotional distance this way: “In this episode, drama feels like something that happens to other people.” These are Carr’s assessments, not an established critical consensus.

Why does the episode feel slow?

The opening two episodes had established a low-key style of spycraft, according to Carr’s framing. Episode 3 continues that subdued mode, emphasizing personal complications and dialogue over immediate action or a clear payoff. That choice can create a patient, atmospheric build, but it also asks viewers to stay engaged while its character threads develop only slightly.

The result is a mismatch for anyone expecting the familiar engine of an espionage thriller: urgent developments, consequential information and mounting danger. Carr sees the episode’s restraint as leaving viewers with too little to interpret or anticipate. Whether that feels like deliberate slow-burn storytelling or simply a lack of momentum is a matter of taste.
