A flash-forward strand involving Noah and Cole introduces an early mystery: someone is missing, and the story withholds what has happened. That uncertainty matters because the show’s shifting points of view can change how a scene reads as new information arrives. The season’s suspense is not just about Alison’s whereabouts, but about how the characters’ incomplete understandings fit together.
How Alison, Cole, Noah, and Helen’s stories intersect
Alison’s relationship with Ben develops as Cole tries to build a life with his new wife, Luisa, while remaining emotionally tied to Alison. The episode summaries track Alison and Ben as they dig into her past, and show Cole’s connection with Alison putting pressure on his marriage. Noah faces difficulties in his teaching job and in his relationship with his son; Helen searches for meaning amid the changes in her life.

These are parallel pressures rather than a return to the characters’ earlier pairings. Their histories still shape their choices, but the season places them in changed circumstances—especially Noah and Helen’s life in Los Angeles and Cole’s marriage to Luisa.
What happened to Alison? Episode 9 explained
Ben killed Alison. Episode 9, “The Grownups,” first shows a more conciliatory possibility for Alison’s final encounter with Ben. That version is imagined; it is not the account of what actually happened. The episode then presents the actual confrontation, in which Alison returns from Los Angeles and challenges Ben about his lies and marriage.
Rank #2
Alison rejects Ben and tells him to leave. He refuses, the argument turns violent, and Ben attacks her and carries her to the water. The distinction between the imagined scene and the actual events is essential: Alison did not die by suicide. Ben killed her after she tried to end the encounter. TV Guide’s episode guide lists the season’s episodes; a contemporary recap of the reveal is available from Vulture.
The episode gives context for Ben’s behavior, including his return to drinking and his lies about his wife and children. That context does not excuse his actions: Alison tells him to go, and Ben chooses to assault her.

The Season 4 finale: Alison’s funeral and the aftermath
The finale, “410,” moves among Noah’s, Cole’s, and Helen’s perspectives. Noah is at Princeton with Anton, but realizes he should be helping with Alison’s funeral. Cole struggles to prepare for the service and reacts to Athena’s decision to hold it on the beach and spread Alison’s ashes there, rather than bury her with their son Gabriel.
Noah, Cole, and Ben attend the funeral. The three perspectives place their different relationships to Alison’s death alongside one another, without making grief or the characters’ histories resolve neatly. Alison is dead; Noah and Cole share a point of grief, but the finale leaves the surviving characters’ lives unsettled.
The series continues beyond Season 4. Showtime announced Season 5 as the final season; TV Insider’s contemporaneous finale coverage describes the Noah, Cole, and Helen perspectives and reports the planned continuation.

Season 4 resolves the central question of Alison’s death, but it does not conclude The Affair. Its ending carries the consequences into the announced fifth and final season. The finale’s separate perspectives also preserve a defining feature of the series: the same loss sits differently with each person who knew Alison.
