The Acolyte finale reveals the shadowy figure as Darth Plagueis, the Muun Sith Lord who becomes Darth Sidious’s master. The appearance adds a new chapter to Star Wars history, but official coverage says the series does not change the events of The Phantom Menace or the wider Skywalker saga. Its larger twist is thematic: the Jedi Order’s failures can have consequences without rewriting what happens later.
Who is the Sith Lord in The Acolyte?
The cloaked figure glimpsed in the finale is Darth Plagueis. StarWars.com identified the reveal in an interview with Amandla Stenberg, who plays twins Osha and Mae. Stenberg said she had not been told about Plagueis before the finale aired: “But Plagueis was hidden from me.” (StarWars.com, July 23, 2024.)

Lucasfilm’s Databank entry describes Plagueis as a Muun Sith Lord, the former Master of Darth Sidious, and an enemy of the Jedi during the High Republic. It also lists The Acolyte among his appearances. The finale therefore connects the series’ earlier-era story to a character whose later place in the saga is already established.
How does Osha’s story connect to the reveal?
Osha and Mae are twins whose paths diverge. StarWars.com describes Osha’s journey as one from former Jedi Padawan toward Sith acolyte. Plagueis’s appearance places her turn within a wider Sith context, but the official coverage cited here does not explain the precise relationship between Plagueis and Qimir, the masked figure who trained Osha.

That distinction matters. The finale invites viewers to wonder whether Qimir is Plagueis’s apprentice, a rival, or connected to him in another way. Those are interpretations, not details confirmed by the cited official sources. The appearance of Plagueis is established; a specific master–apprentice arrangement with Qimir is not.
Does The Acolyte break Star Wars canon?
No. StarWars.com’s official finale analysis says the series does not change events in The Phantom Menace or the broader Skywalker saga. It adds events and context earlier in the timeline; it does not, according to that analysis, alter the later chronology. (StarWars.com, July 17, 2024.)

Plagueis’s presence can make the history leading toward the prequel era feel more immediate, but an earlier story involving a known character is not by itself a contradiction. The official Databank places his activity against the Jedi in the High Republic and identifies his later role as Sidious’s master. The finale analysis explicitly preserves the later saga’s events.
What does the finale change about how we see the Jedi?
The show’s most consequential addition is a closer look at the Jedi as a powerful institution in the High Republic. Creator and showrunner Leslye Headland framed the premise around the period before the Jedi’s later collapse. In a StarWars.com interview, she said, “If Star Wars is about the underdog versus the institution, [in The Acolyte] the Jedi are the institution.” She also described the central question as “What went wrong?” (StarWars.com, March 19, 2024.)

In the official finale coverage, Headland said, “I don’t see the Jedi as antagonists. I see them as flawed, and it was a story that I felt really excited to tell.” The finale analysis presents individual failures and institutional decisions as seeds that can grow into broader consequences. The story supplies context for later turmoil, rather than claiming to replace the events that lead to it.

- Confirmed: Plagueis appears in The Acolyte; the official Databank identifies him as a Muun, Sidious’s former Master, and an opponent of the Jedi during the High Republic.
- Confirmed: Osha’s arc turns from former Jedi Padawan toward Sith acolyte, and the finale places Plagueis in the story around that development.
- Confirmed: Official finale analysis says the series does not change the later Skywalker saga events.
- Unresolved in the cited official material: Exactly how Plagueis relates to Qimir, whether Qimir is formally his apprentice, and what that relationship means for any future story.
