Key takeaways
- The December 2024 selection contains eight varied Christmas titles, ranging from the 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life to the 2024 action comedy Red One.
- Red One arrived on Prime Video on December 12, 2024, while Jack in Time for Christmas premiered on December 3, 2024.
- The Holiday was listed in the US through Amazon rental, purchase, and DVD/Blu-ray routes rather than as a guaranteed Prime subscription title.
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas means the 2000 Jim Carrey live-action film in this list, not the 2018 animated adaptation.
- Prime Video catalogs change by country and date, so the list records the 2024 holiday-season snapshot rather than promising that every title remains included with Prime today.
How were these eight Christmas movies selected?
These eight films and holiday productions were selected for variety rather than as a definitive ranking. The December 27, 2024 Extra.ie Prime Video holiday roundup supplied the contemporaneous eight-title editorial shortlist, while JustWatch’s US holiday-season guide, published November 29 and updated December 27, 2024, helped clarify the difference between subscription streaming, rental, purchase, and physical-media availability.
The ordering moves from broad family entertainment to romance, recent action, short-form comedy, British comfort viewing, nostalgic fantasy, and finally a classic emotional drama. Availability was checked for the 2024 holiday season, primarily with US catalog evidence where stated. Availability in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and other territories may differ.

What are the eight best Christmas movies on Prime Video for December 2024?
1. Candy Cane Lane (2023) — best family fantasy comedy
Candy Cane Lane is the accessible family pick for viewers who want a high-concept Christmas comedy with supernatural chaos. Eddie Murphy plays Chris Carver, a man determined to win his neighborhood’s holiday decorating contest.
Chris’s bargain with a mischievous elf turns the Twelve Days of Christmas into a literal problem, allowing the film to escalate through broad comedy, fantasy, and effects-heavy set pieces. The result is more cartoonish and visually driven than a traditional Christmas classic, which makes it a useful choice for families who prefer spectacle over sentiment.
The film appeared in the December 2024 Prime Video holiday coverage, including the contemporaneous eight-film roundup. Check the current Prime Video listing before assuming subscription inclusion, because catalog rights can change.
2. Last Christmas (2019) — best bittersweet Christmas romance
Last Christmas is the choice for viewers who want a London-set romantic Christmas movie that becomes more emotionally serious than its opening premise suggests. Emilia Clarke plays Kate, an aspiring singer working as a Christmas-shop elf, while Henry Golding plays Tom, the man whose arrival changes her outlook.

Romance, loneliness, family tension, and a more bittersweet emotional arc give the film greater weight than its festive setup initially implies.
December 2024 recommendation coverage identified Last Christmas as a Prime Video selection. That historical listing should not be read as a guarantee of permanent Prime subscription access; verify the current listing for your country.

![Hallmark 3-Movie Collection: Christmas on Duty, The Christmas Cup, Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater [DVD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51fJASSWhOL._SL160_.jpg)
- Christmas on Duty - After a snowstorm prevents all the presents from being delivered to base, two rival marines must team up for a special mission…to save Christmas. Stars Janel Parrish, Parker Young, and Peter Jacobson.
- The Christmas Cup - Marine Kelly leads her hometown team in the Christmas Cup against the neighboring town with help from Fireman Quinn. That is until he becomes the competition. Starring Rhiannon Fish and Ben Rosenbaum.
3. Red One (2024) — best action Christmas adventure
Red One is the best fit for families or groups who want an action blockbuster rather than a quiet or traditional Christmas film. Dwayne Johnson plays North Pole security chief Callum Drift, who joins Chris Evans’s bounty hunter Jack O’Malley to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus, played by J.K. Simmons.
The premise combines Santa mythology with a globe-trotting action-comedy structure. The film offers recognizable stars, spectacle, and a modern blockbuster approach to Christmas, so it is particularly suitable when viewers want something larger and louder than a familiar seasonal romance.

Red One arrived on Prime Video on December 12, 2024, according to contemporaneous availability coverage and the JustWatch US listing. A current listing is still necessary before viewing because the page’s availability can change by date and territory.
4. Jack in Time for Christmas (2024) — best short celebrity comedy
Jack in Time for Christmas is a hybrid Christmas comedy and travelogue, not a conventional feature film. Jack Whitehall plays a stranded traveler trying to get from the United States back to the United Kingdom before Christmas.
The scripted comedy is built around travel and celebrity appearances, including Michael Bublé, Dave Bautista, Rebel Wilson, Jimmy Fallon, Daisy May Cooper, and Tom Davis. The format makes it a strong choice for a lighter group watch or for viewers who do not want to commit to a traditional feature-length narrative.
The production premiered on Prime Video on December 3, 2024. The JustWatch US availability page provides a useful historical reference, but the current platform listing should be checked before watching.

5. The Holiday (2006) — best glossy romantic-comedy comfort watch
The Holiday is the safest romantic-comedy recommendation in this group: it is warm, star-driven, familiar, and easy to program for a couples’ or friends’ movie night. Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz play women who exchange homes during the Christmas season after difficult breakups, while Jude Law and Jack Black are among the principal co-stars.
The two house exchanges create parallel stories about new romantic possibilities, emotional recovery, and the comfort of an unfamiliar place during the holidays. The film works especially well when the audience wants seasonal atmosphere and ensemble charm rather than a challenging or intense drama.
In the US, JustWatch’s December 2024 holiday guide listed The Holiday through Amazon rental and purchase routes, as well as DVD/Blu-ray options. “Available through Amazon” therefore does not automatically mean “included with a Prime subscription.”
If streaming rights change, a physical copy can provide a more durable fallback. Readers who specifically want to own the film can look for The Holiday DVD; a DVD is not required to watch a digital Prime Video rental or purchase.

6. Your Christmas or Mine? (2022) — best British family-meeting rom-com
Your Christmas or Mine? is the under-the-radar British alternative to The Holiday, focusing more directly on the awkwardness of meeting each other’s families. Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk play a young couple who independently try to surprise each other at Christmas.
Their separate plans leave each person at the other’s family home, creating misunderstandings and comic complications. The two family settings provide the seasonal warmth, while the central couple’s lack of coordination supplies the film’s narrative engine.

This recommendation is for the 2022 film, not the 2023 sequel Your Christmas or Mine 2. December 2024 coverage identified the first film as a Prime Video holiday recommendation, but current availability should be confirmed for the viewer’s location.
7. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) — best Jim Carrey holiday nostalgia
How the Grinch Stole Christmas is the 2000 live-action adaptation starring Jim Carrey, and it is the right choice for families who want maximal production design, broad physical comedy, and a recognizable story. Carrey plays Dr. Seuss’s holiday-hating Grinch, whose relationship with Whoville changes as the story develops.
The film’s appeal comes from its elaborate look, energetic performance, and exaggerated comic style. Viewers searching for “The Grinch” should identify the year and lead actor carefully: this selection is not the later 2018 animated adaptation.
December 2024 editorial coverage specifically distinguished the Jim Carrey version from other Grinch films, including the holiday recommendation coverage that identified the 2000 film. The current Prime Video catalog may not match the 2024 snapshot.
8. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) — best enduring Christmas classic
It’s a Wonderful Life is the strongest emotional choice and the most historically enduring film in the selection. Frank Capra’s story follows George Bailey, a community-minded man who reaches a crisis on Christmas Eve and is shown how profoundly his life has affected other people.
The film is slower and more reflective than the comedies above, and its black-and-white presentation asks viewers to let the story build before its emotional payoff. It is best for an audience ready for a sincere classic rather than fast jokes or modern visual spectacle.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which movie should you choose?
The best choice depends on the kind of Christmas watch the audience wants. Candy Cane Lane suits broad family viewing, Red One suits action fans, and Jack in Time for Christmas suits a shorter celebrity comedy. Last Christmas and The Holiday are the strongest romance options, while Your Christmas or Mine? offers a more specifically British family-comedy angle.
| If you want… | Choose… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Family-friendly fantasy and visual comedy | Candy Cane Lane | A decorating contest becomes a supernatural Twelve Days of Christmas problem |
| Action, stars, and Christmas spectacle | Red One | A North Pole security chief and bounty hunter rescue Santa |
| A quick, celebrity-filled group watch | Jack in Time for Christmas | A scripted travel comedy with guest appearances |
| Romance with a more serious emotional turn | Last Christmas | London atmosphere, Wham! connection, and a bittersweet arc |
| Comfort-viewing romantic comedy | The Holiday | Home swapping, an ensemble cast, and familiar holiday warmth |
| A British alternative about families | Your Christmas or Mine? | Two surprise plans send a young couple to each other’s homes |
| Jim Carrey nostalgia | How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) | Broad live-action comedy and elaborate Whoville production design |
| A reflective black-and-white classic | It’s a Wonderful Life | George Bailey’s Christmas Eve crisis leads to the selection’s deepest emotional payoff |
What should you check before watching?
Check the title’s current Prime Video page and the country-specific availability before starting a movie. The December 2024 US evidence shows why: Amazon’s holiday catalog mixed titles included with a subscription with titles available through rental, purchase, or physical media.
- Search for the exact title and year, especially How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) and Your Christmas or Mine? (2022).
- Confirm whether the listing says included with Prime, rent, buy, or another access method.
- Check the film’s runtime and format when planning a group watch; Jack in Time for Christmas is a hybrid comedy special rather than a standard feature.
- Do not assume that a 2024 US listing applies to another country or remains unchanged in a later holiday season.
Optional movie-night extras
A group watching several of these titles could add a Christmas movie trivia game or holiday film quiz after the screening. A trivia game is an optional social accessory, not something required to watch any Prime Video title. Availability and suitability should be checked before purchase.

Are all eight Christmas movies still included with Prime Video?
The list is a December 2024 snapshot, not a guarantee of the current catalog. Prime Video availability changes by country and over time, and some US listings used rental, purchase, or DVD/Blu-ray routes instead of Prime subscription streaming.
Is Jack in Time for Christmas a regular Christmas movie?
Yes. Jack in Time for Christmas is a hybrid scripted comedy and travelogue starring Jack Whitehall, rather than a conventional feature film. It follows a stranded traveler trying to get from the United States to the United Kingdom before Christmas.
Which version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is on this list?
The list means the 2000 live-action film starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch. The 2018 animated adaptation is a separate movie and should not be confused with the 2000 version when searching Prime Video.
The Bottom Line
The eight-title December 2024 Prime Video snapshot offers a choice for nearly every kind of holiday audience: Red One for action, The Holiday for romantic comfort, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) for Jim Carrey nostalgia, and It’s a Wonderful Life for classic emotional weight. Because catalog rights vary by country and change over time, verify whether each title is currently included with Prime or requires a rental, purchase, or physical copy.
