The 7 Most Haunted Spots at the Stanley Hotel

Room 217 is the Stanley Hotel’s best-known ghost legend, but six other locations recur in reported stories. Here’s what the lore says—and what visitors can actually access on the hotel’s Ghost Tour.

The seven places most often linked to ghost stories at the Stanley Hotel are rooms 217, 401, 407, 418 and 428, the Concert Hall, and the Music Room or ballroom. These are locations in reported folklore—not a verified list of hauntings or an official hotel ranking. The hotel’s own Ghost Tour route changes, and it does not enter guest rooms or guest floors.

What the stories do—and do not—establish

The Stanley Hotel is in Estes Park, Colorado. Visit Estes Park says F.O. Stanley built it in 1909 as an upscale resort and wellness destination, and recounts its later literary association with Stephen King. The hotel is famous in part for its connection to The Shining, but Stanley was not the filming location for Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 movie. Visit Estes Park’s account of Stephen King and the hotel provides that context.

Stories about ghosts at the Stanley come from reported experiences and local lore. The sources describing these locations do not verify paranormal activity, and there is no reliable published tally of sightings or investigations to establish how often such events occur. The seven places below are a useful guide to recurring stories, not proof that the hotel is haunted.

Five rooms associated with ghost stories

Room 217

Room 217 is the best-known room in the hotel’s ghost lore. Accounts connect its story to housekeeper Elizabeth Wilson and to Stephen King’s stay at the Stanley. Those connections are part of the room’s legend; neither establishes that anything paranormal happened there. Legends of America’s account of Stanley Hotel lore and Haunted Rooms’ guide recount versions of the stories.

Room 401

Stories about Room 401 describe a figure or noises associated with a closet. One account notes a possible ordinary source for banging: the closet shares a wall with an old elevator. That explanation does not settle every report, but it is a reminder to distinguish an experience someone describes from the cause attributed to it. Legends of America discusses the room and the elevator-wall detail.

Room 407

Room 407 appears on lists of rooms sought by visitors interested in the hotel’s reported hauntings. The available accounts provide less consistent detail about this room than about Room 217, so it is best described as part of the hotel’s ghost lore rather than assigned a definitive apparition or story. Haunted Rooms includes it in its guide.

Room 418

Room 418 is also named in secondary lists of reportedly haunted rooms. Specific versions of its story vary, so no single vivid account should be treated as settled fact. Haunted Rooms’ list places it among the rooms associated with the hotel’s folklore.

Room 428

Room 428 likewise appears in accounts of the Stanley’s reportedly haunted rooms. The claim belongs to the hotel’s ghost-story tradition; the available material does not establish a verified apparition. Haunted Rooms’ guide includes the room.

Two public spaces in the lore

The Concert Hall

Secondary accounts place reports of unexplained sounds and ghost stories in the Concert Hall. The hotel identifies the Concert Hall as a venue on the property, but its official material does not confirm paranormal activity there. A location’s inclusion in ghost lore should not be confused with an official finding.

The Music Room or ballroom

Stories associate the Music Room or ballroom with piano music and with Flora Stanley. Both the attribution to her and the supernatural interpretation are folklore, not verified events. Legends of America recounts stories connected with the hotel’s music spaces.

Can you visit Room 217 on the Ghost Tour?

No. The hotel says its guided, 60-minute Ghost Tour does not go into guest rooms or onto guest floors. It covers locations the hotel characterizes as spiritually active and discusses documented hauntings and folklore, but its route varies according to availability, time of day, and time of year. The hotel lists a 20-person limit, recommends advance reservations, and sets an age minimum of eight. Check the hotel’s current Ghost Tour information for booking details, route, and price, since operating terms can change.

The hotel also sells separate Historic and Shining tours. Its 60-minute Shining Tour focuses on differences among King’s novel, Kubrick’s 1980 film, and the 1997 miniseries; it is about the work and its adaptations, not a visit to a movie set at the Stanley. See the hotel’s Shining Tour information for current details. A print copy of King’s novel is a natural companion for readers interested in that literary connection, but it is not evidence for the hotel’s ghost stories.
