50 Cent is the stage name of Curtis James Jackson III, the Queens-born rapper whose return to recording after a 2000 shooting led to a major-label deal and the 2003 breakthrough album Get Rich or Die Tryin’. His career later extended into film, television, books, and business. The film that shares the album’s title is a dramatization, not a documentary record of his life.
Who is 50 Cent?
Jackson was born on July 6, 1975, in Queens, New York, and was raised in Jamaica, Queens, by his single mother, according to Biography.com. Details of his early life and the criminal activity associated with his later public image should be understood as biographical accounts, not as a complete explanation of the person or his work.
Jackson’s name became familiar well beyond rap, but music was the starting point: he built an audience through recordings and mixtapes before reaching a wider public through a high-profile label deal. His stage persona and the stories told in songs are not substitutes for independently verified biography.
How did a shooting interrupt his early career?
Biography.com reports that Jackson was shot in 2000 and sustained multiple injuries. After recovering, he returned to recording, working with Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo as part of G-Unit. That sequence matters to his career story: the shooting interrupted his momentum, but it did not end his effort to establish himself in music.

How did 50 Cent become famous?
The key transition was from independent mixtape-era work to the backing of major labels. Biography.com says Eminem and Dr. Dre heard Jackson’s Guess Who’s Back? mixtape in 2002, leading to a joint signing with Shady Records and Aftermath Entertainment. The account links that discovery to the release that brought Jackson to a mainstream audience.
Get Rich or Die Tryin’ became the breakthrough
Released in 2003, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ established Jackson as a major commercial recording artist. The album’s sales figures vary by source: Simon & Schuster reports more than 12 million units worldwide and eight-times platinum, while Biography.com says it eventually sold 9 million units. The sources do not establish that these figures use the same date, geography, or measurement basis, so they should not be combined into one definitive total. See the Simon & Schuster author page and Biography.com’s career account.

What is Get Rich or Die Tryin’ about?
The title refers to two different works: Jackson’s 2003 breakthrough album and a 2005 film. The film is a drama based on Jackson’s transformation, not a documentary about events presented as literal fact. Paramount describes it as a 117-minute, R-rated film directed by Jim Sheridan, starring Jackson alongside Terrence Howard, Joy Bryant, and Viola Davis. Its synopsis and credits are on Paramount’s film page.
The film can introduce viewers to a dramatized version of Jackson’s story, but it should be approached as entertainment rather than independent verification. The distinction is especially important when a film’s plot and a performer’s public persona are closely connected.

How did his career expand beyond music?
Jackson’s work has included acting, producing, writing, and television, as well as recording. The Television Academy’s profile discusses his work across music, film, and television. His official website groups current public activities under music, spirits, film, and philanthropy and links to Sire Spirits, G-Unity, and 50 Cent Action. Those listings show the range of areas associated with his public work; they do not establish revenue, ownership shares, or the status of every project.
Books and Jackson’s own account
For a first-person perspective, Jackson’s memoir is From Pieces to Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside Queens. The publisher presents it as his memoir, so it is valuable as Jackson’s account of his life rather than a neutral biography or independent confirmation of every detail. Simon & Schuster’s book page describes the memoir; its author page lists it among his books.
Philanthropy
The G-Unity Foundation says Jackson founded it and describes its mission as supporting conscious capitalism and developing young people’s social and leadership skills nationwide. That description comes from the foundation itself; its account is available on the G-Unity Foundation’s Our Story page.

Jackson’s rise was not a single event. The account runs from a Queens upbringing and early recording work, through a serious interruption and return to music, to the mixtape connection that led to a major-label signing. Get Rich or Die Tryin’ converted that opening into a mainstream breakthrough, while later work carried his name into other industries. For Jackson’s own interpretation, the memoir is the most direct of the works discussed here; for the 2005 film, the essential distinction is that it dramatizes rather than documents his life.
