The closest match to “The 50 best TV shows of 2023, ranked” is TheWrap’s year-end staff list, published December 19, 2023. It selects shows from broadcast, cable and streaming, but it does not disclose a scoring formula or ranking methodology. Read it as an editorial roundup, not an objective ranking or a current guide to what is streaming.
What this 2023 list represents
TheWrap presents the selections as staff picks and credits eleven contributors: Jose Alejandro Bastidas, Dessi Gomez, Sharon Knolle, Kayla Cobb, Lucas Manfredi, Drew Taylor, Loree Seitz, Adam Chitwood, Raquel Harris, Andi Ortiz and Haleigh Foutch. Its opening frames the year through returning hits, series finales, new streaming shows and linear television, with examples including Succession, The Last of Us, Beef, The Buccaneers, The Curse, The Golden Bachelor and Fargo.
TheWrap’s headline is “The 50 Best TV Shows of 2023”; the supplied phrase “ranked” is not part of that headline. The article offers short editorial assessments rather than a stated point system, panel vote or eligibility rules. Its contributors discuss qualities such as performances, writing, story resolution, genre execution, adaptation and cultural or emotional resonance. Those are useful ways to compare the entries, but they are an interpretation of the commentary—not official criteria declared by TheWrap.
Shows highlighted in the roundup
The opening entries include Abbott Elementary, All the Light We Cannot See, Barry and The Bear. Other prominent selections discussed in the article include Beef, The Last of Us and Succession. TheWrap’s selection reflects the range of television it set out to cover across broadcast, cable and streaming; it is not presented as a list limited to one genre or platform.

Adaptation and source material
For viewers interested in how a show transforms another medium, TheWrap describes The Last of Us as an adaptation of a PlayStation video-game franchise. Comparing the television drama with the game can illuminate what changes when interactive storytelling becomes a screen narrative.
A reported audience figure, not a quality score
In its discussion of Squid Game: The Challenge, TheWrap reports that the show drew 20,100,000 views and 85,700,000 hours streamed during its first premiere week on Netflix’s global most-watched English-language TV list. The article associates that premiere week with November 22 and was published December 19, 2023. These are Netflix audience metrics as reported by TheWrap; they are neither a measure of this list’s ranking nor independent evidence of a show’s quality.
