New West Records independently lists the feature among the press highlights for Nada Surf’s Moon Mirror, confirming that the album received recognition in the list.

How to read a “best of” list
It is a point of view, not a universal verdict
A publication’s year-end list reflects editorial judgment. It can help readers find records they missed, but it does not establish an objective measure of quality or settle which albums belong in the genre.

Indie rock has porous boundaries
Genre labels overlap. Album of the Year’s 2024 indie-rock catalog also assigns records styles such as art rock, punk, singer-songwriter, dream pop, and post-punk. That catalog illustrates how neighboring sounds can sit alongside an indie-rock label; it does not describe Rolling Stone’s own genre rules.
Lists answer different questions
Album of the Year’s 2024 indie-rock year-end aggregate says it draws on 121 lists shown on its page. That is a measure of a broader critical conversation, not Rolling Stone’s methodology or a count of Rolling Stone voters.

Other publications make their process more explicit. The Guardian said its 2024 50 best albums were decided by 26 of its music writers. The Associated Press took a different approach: its 10 under-the-radar albums were chosen by AP Music Writer Maria Sherman and presented “in no particular order.” These examples show why a consensus aggregate, a staff list, and a discovery-oriented selection should not be treated as interchangeable.
