There is no definitive ranking of the Beatles’ best songs. Beatles Radio’s August 13, 2024 list puts “A Hard Day’s Night” first and “A Day in the Life” second; Time Out’s October 3, 2024 list reverses the lead and places “Come Together” and “Blackbird” next. The differences reflect editorial choices, not a settled measure of musical merit.
What the 2024 Beatles Radio ranking says
Beatles Radio’s “The 50 best Beatles songs ever, ranked” was published August 13, 2024 and credits EW Staff and Kevin Jacobsen. It says its 50 selections were narrowed from “more than 200 recorded songs.” That figure describes the publication’s selection pool; it is not an independently verified count of the Beatles’ complete recorded catalog.
The list opens with “A Hard Day’s Night” at No. 1 and “A Day in the Life” at No. 2. Those placements are the editors’ judgment. The page does not provide a shared scoring rubric or song-by-song explanation that would make the positions an objective result.
How Time Out’s list differs
Time Out’s “The 50 best Beatles songs”, dated October 3, 2024 and edited by Georgia Evans and Ella Doyle, begins with “A Day in the Life,” followed by “Come Together” and “Blackbird.” Time Out describes its list as a poll of Beatles enthusiasts on its team.
#1 Best Overall
| Ranking | Published | Stated approach | First three |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beatles Radio | August 13, 2024 | Editorial selection narrowed from more than 200 recorded songs, according to the publisher | “A Hard Day’s Night”; “A Day in the Life”; further order not stated here |
| Time Out | October 3, 2024 | Poll of Beatles enthusiasts on its team | “A Day in the Life”; “Come Together”; “Blackbird” |
These lists use different participants and approaches, and their publishers do not supply a common scoring system. Their positions are therefore not directly comparable as if they were results from the same test.
Why there is no single correct order
“Best” can mean different things: a listener may prioritize songwriting, performance, innovation, emotional effect, or personal memories. An editorial list expresses its editors’ choices; a poll reflects the people who participated and the way their responses were gathered. Neither method turns taste into a universal verdict.

The Beatles Leaderboard offers another frame: it averages song positions across participants’ personal rankings and explicitly notes that there is no single correct ranking. An average can show where a group’s preferences converge, but it still describes that group rather than settling the question for every listener.

The Beatles’ official song catalog lists titles with chronological dates. It dates “A Hard Day’s Night” to July 10, 1964 and “A Day In The Life” to June 1, 1967. Those entries help check spelling and catalog chronology; they do not explain or validate either song’s position on a “best” list.
