Spoilers for Season 5. The season leaves June facing the consequences of Fred’s murder, still fighting to get Hannah back, and confronting a Canada that is becoming less safe for refugees. Serena’s new position as a widow under strict rules offers a sharp reversal, while the finale sends June and Nichole out of Toronto without resolving the larger conflict.
Hulu’s Seasons 1–5 refresher highlights “Morning” (Season 5, Episode 1), “Alliance” (Episode 9), and “Safe” (Episode 10). These five turning points are the essentials to carry forward.
1. June begins the season reckoning with Fred’s murder
June’s role in Fred’s killing at the end of the previous season does not become a clean victory. Hulu’s recap frames Season 5 around the consequences she must confront after leading the charge on his murder. That aftermath shapes her emotional starting point and complicates any sense of closure.
2. Hannah remains the mission June and Luke cannot abandon
June and Luke pursue a mission to save their daughter from Gilead. Hannah’s fate remains unresolved in this season: the mission is a driving purpose, not proof that the rescue succeeds. Remembering that distinction matters when picking up the story later.

3. Serena’s new constraints do not erase her past power
After Fred’s death, Serena is a widow living under strict rules imposed by her new hosts. Her circumstances reverse her former position as one of Gilead’s influential architects, but that reversal does not make her experience equivalent to June’s captivity. Serena helped shape a system of control; now she encounters restrictions within it from a different position.
4. Canada is becoming less welcoming to refugees
Canada had offered June and other refugees a place beyond Gilead’s direct reach, but the season’s finale recap describes growing support for Gilead and violence toward refugees. The change makes the country a less reliable refuge and gives June and Nichole’s eventual departure from Toronto both personal and political urgency.

5. June and Nichole leave Toronto, not the conflict
In “Safe,” the Season 5 finale, June and Nichole escape Toronto. Their departure opens an uncertain next chapter; it does not settle June’s effort to free Hannah or bring down Gilead. Hulu’s Season 6 synopsis describes June being pulled back into the fight, and Hulu’s Season 6 release information identifies it as the series’ final season. Its first three episodes premiered April 8, 2025, with the finale premiering May 27, 2025.
