That tension is also reflected in Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus, which says those qualities sometimes get in the way even as the film brings Elphaba and Glinda’s story home in rousing fashion. These are critical interpretations, not universal audience verdicts.
Universal’s 2025 film concludes its two-part telling of Wicked, with Elphaba and Glinda estranged and living with the consequences of their choices. It adapts the stage musical’s second act, a section that has to bridge a time jump, connect with the familiar events of The Wizard of Oz, and resolve the central characters’ stories. Those demands help explain why the film can feel both ambitious and strained.

1. The darker mood and slower pacing can drain momentum
The most directly supported criticism is a matter of rhythm and tone. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the film’s darker tone and “unhurried pacing” as obstacles at times. A more somber atmosphere can give the characters’ changed circumstances weight, but it can also make the story feel less propulsive, especially when the plot has several major pieces to move into place.
The qualification matters: the consensus does not dismiss the film’s mood or say the pacing fails throughout. It identifies moments when the approach gets in the way, while still praising the conclusion. The issue is whether the film maintains enough forward motion between its emotional peaks.

2. The second act has a lot of story to carry
The source material’s second act must do more than continue the conflict between Elphaba and Glinda. Time has passed, the story must meet the narrative of The Wizard of Oz, and the principal characters need endings. Director Jon M. Chu has discussed these as central adaptation challenges in The Atlantic.
That structural load makes the film’s crowded feeling understandable, though “overloaded” is an interpretation rather than an established fact. A scene may be serving several purposes at once: advancing the Oz connection, explaining changed circumstances, and moving a character toward resolution. When those jobs compete for attention, the drama can feel less focused than the emotional stakes warrant.

3. Added material has to justify a 2-hour-17-minute runtime
Netflix lists Wicked: For Good as a musical fantasy with a runtime of 2 hours 17 minutes. The runtime is a listing fact, not proof that the movie is too long. But the Associated Press notes that the film expands minor-character development and adds two songs compared with the stage second act, giving viewers more material to assess.
Expansion can make a film adaptation feel richer when it deepens a relationship or clarifies a choice. It can also slow the central story if a new beat does not change what the characters want, what they risk, or what happens next. The question is not whether a feature should match the stage version’s length; it is whether each addition earns its place in this version of the story.

4. New songs and character beats can interrupt dramatic flow
The AP review identifies two new songs and additional development for minor characters. Their presence creates an opportunity to broaden the film, but it does not establish that critics or audiences dislike them. Their effectiveness depends on placement and dramatic function: does a song reveal a change, sharpen a conflict, or move a relationship forward, or does it pause a scene that already has momentum?
The same test applies to expanded supporting-character scenes. More context can make the world feel populated and the stakes clearer. If those moments arrive while the main conflict is waiting to advance, they may contribute to the sense of an uneven pace rather than relieve it.

5. An emotional ending may not smooth the whole journey
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus holds two ideas together: the film’s tone and pacing can impede it, yet its conclusion brings Elphaba and Glinda’s story home in rousing fashion. That distinction is useful. A strong final payoff can make the characters’ journey feel worthwhile without making every stretch of the route equally effective.
For viewers, the trade-off is whether the ending’s emotional weight compensates for the slower or more crowded passages that precede it. The film’s reception cannot be reduced to either “the ending works” or “the pacing falters”: both can be true.

How to judge the film’s trade-offs
- Pacing: Does the darker, slower approach create atmosphere, or make the story lose momentum?
- Adaptation: Do the time jump and connection to The Wizard of Oz feel integrated with the characters’ own stories?
- Added material: Do the new songs and expanded supporting-character beats deepen the drama enough to justify the extra screen time?
- Payoff: Does the conclusion make the film’s uneven stretches feel emotionally earned?
