There is no official ranking of the Met Gala’s most iconic looks. This editorial selection weighs four things: how closely a look engaged with its year’s theme, how visually distinctive it was, whether it generated documented conversation, and how often it has remained in later fashion coverage. Those are judgment criteria, not a score—and the list is a selection, not a definitive verdict.
The Met Gala’s fashion is also a record of how designers and guests translate an exhibition into public spectacle. Some entries stand out for a silhouette; others for performance, interpretation, or the personal response of an editor. The looks below span several decades and are identified by wearer, designer, year, and theme where the cited retrospectives support those details.
1970s: Hollywood glamour and theatrical exposure
1. Cher in Bob Mackie, 1974
Cher’s Bob Mackie look is a recurring fixture in retrospective accounts of the gala. Its association with the 1974 theme, “Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design,” makes it a particularly direct meeting of celebrity image and event subject. Its continued presence in later coverage is part of what makes it a durable reference point rather than merely a striking outfit in a single photograph. i-D’s retrospective and The Pink Issue’s selection both include it.
1990s: Personal style becomes part of the spectacle
2. Lil’ Kim in Versace, 1999
Lil’ Kim’s Versace appearance is one of the notable examples in i-D’s year-by-year retrospective. The look matters in part because it brings a distinct performer’s visual identity into the gala’s fashion conversation; it is not simply an example of a conventional evening gown. The available retrospective identifies the year and house but does not establish a specific theme connection, so the significance here is its place in the event’s ongoing visual record. i-D

3. Sarah Jessica Parker with Alexander McQueen, 2006
Sarah Jessica Parker’s appearance with Alexander McQueen is among i-D’s highlighted Met Gala moments. The pairing gives the look an added dimension: it is remembered not only as red-carpet dressing but as a meeting of a high-profile wearer and a designer whose work is itself part of fashion history. i-D identifies it as a notable 2006 look; this selection does not assign it a theme interpretation beyond what that retrospective supports. i-D
2010s: Theme interpretation on a grand scale
4. Rihanna in Guo Pei, 2015
For “China: Through the Looking Glass,” Rihanna wore a Guo Pei design that The Pink Issue placed first in its own ranking of iconic Met Gala looks. That placement is the outlet’s editorial judgment, not an official accolade. The look earns its place here because it is tied unmistakably to the exhibition’s cultural subject and has remained a prominent reference in discussions of the gala. The Pink Issue
Rank #2
5. Kate Bosworth in Oscar de la Renta, 2018
Kate Bosworth’s 2018 look prompted a particularly personal response from Coveteur senior fashion editor Ella O’Keeffe, who connected it with that year’s theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” O’Keeffe wrote: “For the 2018 Met theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, Kate Bosworth reworked her Oscar De La Renta wedding look for the red carpet. To me, there were few moments as ethereal as this. Her sheer cape veil, the saint-like baby hairs, the gothic romance of it all still takes me out.” This is one editor’s assessment, not a consensus claim; its value is that it captures how a look can endure through an individual viewer’s vivid reading of it. Coveteur
6. Zendaya in Versace, 2018
Zendaya’s Versace appearance is another of i-D’s notable examples from 2018. In a gala year built around the relationship between fashion and Catholic imagery, a look could become memorable through its visual narrative as much as its construction. i-D identifies the wearer and house, while its retrospective situates the year among theme-led moments. i-D

Rihanna’s Maison Margiela look is also highlighted by i-D in its account of memorable gala fashion. Its inclusion alongside other 2018 looks illustrates why one year can produce multiple lasting interpretations rather than a single agreed-upon “best” outfit. i-D
8. Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell, 2019
Lady Gaga’s Brandon Maxwell appearance is among i-D’s notable examples from the 2019 gala. The retrospective associates it with the year’s event, but does not provide enough detail to support additional claims about how the look was made or received. Its place on this list rests on its standing as one of the year’s frequently cited fashion moments. i-D
9. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in vintage Chanel, 2019
Coveteur editors included the Olsen twins in vintage Chanel among their personal memorable looks. That editorial choice offers a counterpoint to spectacle-first interpretations of the gala: an appearance can stay with a fashion editor because of its point of view and reference to fashion history, not only because it dominates a photograph. Coveteur
10. Billy Porter, 2019
Billy Porter’s 2019 appearance is included in a 2026 retrospective of Met Gala looks. Its inclusion reflects the gala’s capacity to make fashion inseparable from performance and entrance. The cited retrospective supports the selection, but does not provide sufficiently verified designer or garment details to state them here. Vogue

11. Lil Nas X in Versace, 2021
Lil Nas X’s Versace appearance features in the 2026 retrospective alongside other memorable gala moments. It belongs in a list that treats “iconic” as more than a synonym for timeless or restrained: contemporary red-carpet fashion can become part of the event’s lasting record through an emphatic public image. The available citation supports the wearer, house, and year, but not a fuller garment description. Vogue
Why these looks remain part of the Met Gala conversation
The strongest entries do not all succeed for the same reason. Cher’s look is repeatedly revisited in relation to a Hollywood-themed gala; Rihanna’s 2015 appearance has an explicit connection to the exhibition and earned a top place in one outlet’s ranking; Bosworth’s 2018 look is preserved in an editor’s detailed personal response. Other appearances are documented as notable selections in retrospective coverage, even where the sources do not support a more specific explanation.
That unevenness matters: “iconic” has no official designation, and retrospective articles do not always provide equal detail about designers, garments, or theme connections. The names here are therefore best read as a grounded cross-section of memorable moments, not as a complete inventory or a numbered ranking of cultural importance.
